I've been through that recently.
Game is super super boring until you hit level 50 and finish all the regions until Punika/South Vern story, but after that it's probably the best MMO existing right now in terms of raids, challenges, etc

Once you hit 1370 you will be crafting legendary gear to hone further, you get them from 2 places, Abyss dungeon HARD mode and Argos raid.
For "Optimal" crafting, you will be getting 4 abyss dungeon pieces (Chosen) and 2 argos (Preordained / Harsh oath), one of the abyss pieces will be the weapon.
Abyss nets you a total of 48 materials to craft (including first time completon on both Aira's Oculus and Oreha Preveza) AND buying both chests at the end of each, you will be using 45 to craft the weapon and whatever 3 armor pieces. Trade the other 3 abyss mats for 6 leapstones.
Then you will do Argos raid, you only need gate 1 and buying the chest from it to craft your other 2 pieces (including first time chest), it gives you 26 Argos blood in total, and you need 24 for the 2 pieces, the rest of the argos blood (you should be getting 40 total if you ran the 3 gates [you should, always], so 40-24=16) will be traded since they give you 3 great honor leapstones. 2 Argos set is more than enough, never craft argos 5 set coz literally no one uses that set anymore, it's useless if you dont have another person with the opposite set to combo in your party.

Just follow the guide, you will learn what they do as you build your character and why they are important. The most important thing is having a starting point, the guide provides that. Specialization will interact differently for each class. For reference this is Gunslinger where its purely damage added to skills. Some classes use this stat for how much meter each skill will give.

Generally you opt for Crit/Swift/Spec because they give the best dps out of the possible stats

You can be a casual player and follow a guide, there is no harm in it. It doesn't automatically make you some sweaty hardcore player, its just the bare minimum required to get into groups because building your character is an investment that takes times to do and following these guides helps that process so you know what you should be doing, the guides also explain why you pick these things over others.

As for "there is no bad way to play the game" is more that "there is no class/build that is irrelevant" as every class engraving is used and every class is viable. Also bear in mind that this games content is the group content such as Legion Raids and Abyssal Dungeons, alongside the Guardian Raids and your Chaos Dungeons every day.

You will have a much more difficult time if you try to go some obscure route with a build and then try to get into a group when you could have simply built for what you needed from the beginning. The most important thing is you just take it step by step, don't rush, and just try to learn.

Artist is only Support. You're going to get into T3 (current) content pretty quickly and you can very easily just build your skills for general AoE stuff to clear through the story and get through T1 and T2 content. You won't be worrying about engravings and such until T3 content anyway and stats you also don't need to worry about.

I just want to caution you against too much...experimentation as all of the experimenting has already been done by many more players with years more experience. Those guides very much help with understanding your class and why you choose what you choose.

I think engravings are way easier than people think

System where you get lines of combat effects/affixes to your character, each effect having up to 3 levels. You obtain levels by filling up “nodes” of that effect.

There are 3 ways to fill up nodes - your equipped engraving books (up to 12 nodes each book, and you get 2) your accessories (up to 6 nodes for one effect, up to 3 nodes for a second) , and your stone (technically up to 10 nodes on one and 10 nodes on another, but usually around 14 total)

Anyway, those are the numbers in the current endgame. The theory is true for the whole game, you’ll just have fewer available nodes from stones and accessories in the early game

The endgame “standard” is “5x3”, meaning 5 engravings at level 3, so a total of 75 (5x15) nodes.

So it becomes a reasonably basic maths problem to plan that out across your equipment
