My tactic for new Guardians is to always watch a video before. But on top of that I just make sure to host the party finder lobbies. It's easy to throw the bomb and watch when smarter players throw items to learn when to do it myself

you can hone for pretty much free upto 1460

so it puts you in the smack dab of early-mid T3
