As someone who has played both, I would say the raids are not comparable. FF14 raids are much more just about memorizing patterns. In LA, you do memorize the specific bar-mechanics, but FF14 bosses don't have the random mechanics and moves that LA raid bosses have.

As well, you are personally responsible for your health in LA. In FF14, your health is the responsibility of your healer.

Second run Guardians if at all possible. I know matchmaking is dead at lower tiers but you might get lucky
Third do Tower on this alt. If you haven't even done Tower on your main I would suggest doing that first so when you do it on your alt you can get the copius amounts of T1 materials it will give

I've noticed players approach gems in two different ways: either have like 2-3 lvl 5/7/10s or filled the entire one with lvl 2s and 4s

Question:
How should I build gems?

1. Focus on one skill
2. Max out a gem and roll for that
3. Move onto next skill and repeat

OR

1. Equip gems for all skills.
2. Continue fusing gems until you have used it all or fused one that is better than current equipped gem
3. If there are any, upgrade the gem with your new one.
4. Continue farming

I think people are just doing that as a budget stop gap until they can fill with level 5s as that is typically the looked for minimum for doing early T3 things like Argos and the earlier Legion Raids like Valtan and Vykas (maybe clown).

The gems you're equipping can be highly dependent on your build i.e your class engraving as either one may have different priority skills they slot dmg gems for in particular.

Level 5 gems aren't particularly expensive so equipping the ones you need isn't too bad, but for new players that can still be an undesirable amount of gold to spend when level 7s are a goal as well and are like a few times more expensive.

If you're fusing for them you're just likely to use what you can get as rolling for them can cost a good deal of silver depending on luck or lack of it.

Overall you're likely going to be working on level 7s one at a time as you get gems over time.

You don't. You have to make a new character to play a different class.

The game does, however, offer 2 free power passes after completing the North Vern story after you hit 50, as well as there being the Knowledge Transfer system you can use to advance alts to level 50 and 302 ilvl once you unlock it at your Stronghold
