as mentioned above. after a while if no one takes the orb they will explode. this usually dont happend because the orb go out then go back in towards where the boss usually is so the boss would swallow them before they can explode. But if the boss jumps away from his location and no one took the orb then it will explode after a while.
For you situation, the boss released the orbs then phased, and you guys went mid instead of taking the orbs. so their timer ran out and they exploded

this can happened in any situation where the boss moves away from his usually position by either jumping away or moving
