small update, finally got around to fully implementing the music system for the game. So now you can choose which playlist you wanna play (I have only added one currently but more will be available) and fastforward/rewind songs!

another small update! been focusing a lot on improving performance and fixing some bugs this last week. So I don't have all that much to show but I've overhauled the look of the enemies to improve looks + readability and also added a scanline effect, which I think looks really nice (can be disabled)

thank you! maybe, I had a dynamic skybox before where the lighting would go from dawn to dusk but I've had a really hard time making it look any good so I've removed it for now

I've worked on this game for around 5 or 6 months now, though I could have gotten to this point much faster if I had a better plan and idea of what I was making in the beginning 😭.
The game was originally meant to be a small project where I made a character controller similar to Mirrors Edge's. When I finished the controller I decided to actually make a game out of it but since I am quite new to level design I simplified the controller a bit to make it easier to create level for. And this is also where I decided to add the katana because it's cool.
My favorite thing I've added is the probably the music player and the playlist UI. I think it looks really cool!
You have done more than 95% of gamedevs. I can't tell you how many times I've started a project and left it half way through to get on to something else.
Finishing a game is hard even for experienced people, be proud of it even if it doesn't have all the content you would like it to have.

The game doesn't even require Proton to run on Linux Mint, though why there is no sound is a mystery and could be from any number of things.

That may be skill issue, but I have mostly been ignoring the q and just turning manually.
try holding W all the time, then press Q and as soon as you start to turn press Space

Apparently it's been 200 straight minutes. I haven't noticed any bugs, other than my mouse input deciding to die on me on one specific level for reasons unknown. That and the no audio, but that's very likely just Linux.

Good news! It has sound for me now. I guess a restart fixed it. I like it :) Though I would say the music on the menu is VERY loud compared to the waves. I'd reduce the menu music volume by 50-60 percent, personallyl
Doesn't really matter since a volume slider for it exists, but by default it is quite a bit louder than the waves. Though I also know my headset is louder by default than most other headsets, so maybe get someone else to look into this if you're thinking of tweaking the audio.

I will show you roughly what I did. It was basically just me repeating it a lot to shave corners tighter and tighter.

On a low-mid range PC like mine I had to lower the graphics because it wouldn't work and consume a lot of cpu while running. For example neon white works without problems so I think it can be optimized in same way or at least, a better detection on the final hardware for the best graphics settings
At the moment, although I'm very bad and I don't get good times, what I miss the most is to be able to use the mouse freely and not captured all the time at least optionally with some key such as escape.
In my case, when I changed the msaa value I thought it had frozen because I didn't see any feedback such as a small load circle.
Nevertheless, the gameplay is quite robust and I'll keep on playing it these days.
How the hell did Jonathan do sub 17?!
I can add a loading screen if the game freezes when changing settings and I'll also work on optimizing the game further! If you haven't already then I recommend turning of MSAA and SSAO on lower end hardware. Their implementation is really expensive for some reason

bug! I'm guessing you killed the last floating head and the big statue at the same time?
i remember doing this (killing two last heads + the statue) and it was fine (maybe? my memory is questionable)
if it happens in the same frame the chains don't go down for whatever reason, so it only happens sometimes since the attack damage duration is greater than 1 frame
I got some feedback to simplify the wall climb turn jump so that you only need to press Space while wall climbing to do a turn + automatically jump (instead of Q and then Space). I've implemented it and it feels nice but I just wanted to see if there is anyone here that is against a control scheme like that? otherwise I will add it in the next update

btw i found out that sometimes when i launch the game and im on another window it starts at like corner of my screen and i cant drag it back into fullscreen
or when i alt tab for longer time the game wont go back into focus and when i try to switch to it , it just puts my cursor into the corner of my screen and wont make the game window appear

i also just realized that it's even more similar to osu because you have to strike enemies in order, otherwise the katana gets stuck
there are a few cases where you can hit them out of order or you get to choose the order, which is nice

also figured out why i was so bad at the game , i couldnt go past 30fps but i turned down render scale and got stable 60 fps , its probably just me with my integrated graphics
having 60+ fps helps a lot, I will do some more optimization a bit later so you'll hopefully be able to get 60 fps without having to rely on render scale (unless you have a really old or slow computer)
even without a dedicated graphics card I should still be able to (hopefully) optimize it to the point that most people get 60 fps with low settings and 100 render scale
oh yeah it could use some optimization

ive been playing with max 35 fps my computer is really bad, Ill be impressed if you can optimize it to 60 fps for me
As long as there isnt really a difference in physics, the game runs fine on 30 fps though.
You can maybe add some mroe settings flat out killing shaders and making the game terribly ugly, but thats up to you
i couldn't get stable 180fps on max settings
that may sound demanding, but given bg3 runs at 180 just fine on max settings i assume BK (or godot) has some room for optimization
the game can definitely be optimized further, although Godots implementation of SSAO is incredibly expensive for some reason even when turning on all optimization settings for it
I currently get a stable 185fps on my PC with max settings, I'm hoping to bring that up to a stable 205-210fps on max settings

i can see
well image the ziplines as being sort of a catapult, you gain a lot of speed when attaching to one and when you release from the ziplines you keep that speed
the ziplines would be used to cover smaller areas and you could for example attach to a shorter zipline, gain a lot of speed and then fly over water and start wall running on a wall further away
that you couldn't reach with normal movement/slide speed
how will you atach yourself to the zipline]
press E when close and/or look towards it
and then E or Jump to release
and you could also have a longer zipline segment where you just need to quickly kill enemies along the zipline
which i think could be really cool
but these are all just ideas, I will prototype them later and then I can send a video here and you can give feedback on it

yeah maybe, the throwing mechanic is just an idea so I will probably not end up adding it. If I want to add more variety then I will primarily focusing on adding more movement options (like a jumpad or zipline)

And on the last turn try jumping more to the right , you can actually make pretty far jumps if you have enough speed

so if you kill multiple things at a time, you spend less time slowed down

slide at the start instead of running, then you reach max speed a bit faster and don't go as close to the statue as you are doing now
try to kill the statue from as far away as possible while turning around as quickly as possible

I've fixed it now, I increased the duration a bit and now I can constistently do a double kill with 30 fps

climbing feels so inconsistent
anyone else keeps sliding off walls expecting to climb
it's because the tutorial is lying
sometimes, usually when i point my mouse too low don't look "up" enough
you need to hold space when coming in contact with the wall to actually start wall climbing, but the input has a buffer which is why it works sometimes without doing it.
you can release space when you've started to wall climb
(and forward must be held during the whole wall climb)

yeah it's wrong, in the next update it will be correct i.e you only need to move into a wall to start wall climbing
