SECRET HISTORIES

Or

CURIOUS HAPPENINGS SURROUNDING THE SOCIETY OF HEAVENLY KNOWLEDGE CIRCA THE YEAR 1900 AS TOLD BY VARIOUS PARTIES CONTEMPORARY TO SAID EVENTS, VOL I.

Or

GO DIE IN A HOLE

Demo trailer: https://youtu.be/pLpF8yBGvFg

Pre-alpha demo: https://github.com/Mooses2k/SecretHistories/releases/tag/2024-1-21-pa

A dead god lies dreaming beneath Ribblehead.
A comet sighting brings with it the glory of the Fifth World.
Star-crazed cultists call to the Constellation Starfish.
Explore, sneak, loot, survive, escape.
Go die in a hole.

Simulationist dungeon delving:

  • Procedurally generated dungeon levels
  • Realistic light-levels and stealth
  • Intricate impact and object-dragging sound system
  • Opponents can detect noise, your light-sources, etc
  • Hardcore old-school OSR D&D gameplay
  • Detailed main-hand and off-hand inventory system with intuitive controls
  • Hundreds of voice lines by talented voice actors

Some inspiration touchstones:

  • Thief: the Dark Project
  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent
  • Pathways Into Darkness
  • Lost In Vivo
  • Monstrum
  • Receiver
  • Hellish Quart
  • SCP Foundation

The project is GPLv3 open-source and the intention is to make a platform for anyone to make their own adventures in this system without reinventing the wheel.

Two and a half years in the making, so far. Finally have something decent to show.

Anyone is welcome to help - first timers and GODOT pros alike! Just comment here or PM me.

The design doc is in the form of the Github wiki here: https://github.com/Mooses2k/SecretHistories/wiki

Let's go die in a hole!

Here's some of the character models we've made so far:

The RNG giveth and the RNG taketh away.

I've had runs where I found a bullseye lantern, a mace, and a sawed-off shotgun on the first dungeon level, and runs where I've only gotten a candelabra and some bricks to throw.

A good roguelike style game should have continually adapting and controlling your environment as best you can, making the most of a dangerous situation.

It's dark down there. Light is life. Finding better light sources is key.

We're improving the interface for off-hand items. This game let's you use any smaller items you find in the off-hand as well.

While doing so, we'd also like anyone who's reading to quick answer:

  1. What's your preferred crouch key?
  2. Hold or toggle crouch?
  3. Interact/use object in world key?
  4. How important are lean keys to you in a stealth game?

Thank you!

  • Preferred key for crouching would be Left Ctrl.
  • Personally, toggle to crouch/stand. But an option to switch between the two would be preferable. Sometimes you panic when you get caught and for a second you're trying to run while still crouched.
  • Probably the E key or something close to WASD movement. (But why not a mouse button?)
  • Not very important. Depending on the controls and camera, I could alternatively strafe or get the camera in a position where I can see around an object/corner. But if they're there and I remember I can use them, I'll likely use them when the need arises.

This is helpful, folks, thank you

My thought on lean is it's neat but whether you use mod key plus A or D or you use Q and E, it's never really easy to combine with strafing at the same time.

Also, if you're trying to minimize keys used to keep things simple to learn and save keys near WASD for crucial commands, that's potentially two keys used for a feature many people won't or will barely use.

Cleaning up a ton of playtested stuff and will have a better demo in a couple weeks. Don't try it til then - it'll be smoother experience. In the meantime, here's a couple versions of an opening screen in the game. Warning, you may consider this divisive if you have opinions about things. 🙂

I've been told that our humor is, like, so dated now, sadface. In order to stay hip and relevant, this will probably be a secret found somewhere.

Been quiet since nothing much to show during our migration to Godot 4, which is now largely complete. Much prettier, but we haven't completed fixing all the animation issues.

Given how many models/mats, animations, shaders, etc, we had, it was quite a chore.

We're currently refactoring character/animations/items/inventory for ease of contribution.

Our plan is to make this a system for folks to make their own first-person survival horror adventures or just generally physicsy first-person immersive sims.

Godot 3 demo version in opening post. Game is GPL open-source - please reach out if you're interested in contributing. We can offer some small bug/issue bounties as an incentive too.

Wow that’s so great of you to open source this!

I know there's modding communities, but well, folks don't really have full control over the code there.

I come from The Dark Mod and Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, and it's like...hey, let's make something awesome that anybody can improve, ya know? Thankfully I make my money elsewhere, so I don't need the profit motive here too, so yeah. Here's hoping we get some interested folks!

I’m sure you will! I’m set to following, will look forward to checking out the Godot 4 release when it comes out

Ha I hit that hole! I think? Is that what it is?

ashen summit

Yeah, it's like the flame, but ya know...more appropriate for this game. 🙂

This looks great! As a fan of Thief The Dark Project, and The Dark Mod, very nice indeed 😍

Made a little blueprint for dropping items using the power of the PhysicsServer

We're not dead, just dreaming. Still fixing Godot 4 migration issues and rewriting the character controller.

Here's a early version of a recent animation by @latent kite :
