Hey! I'm one of the two developers working on Oblin Party, a physics-based 2D party brawler that we're building with Godot.

Along with sharing updates on the game here, we also have a couple of tutorials planned out for how we've been able to implement some of the aspects of our game that I'll be posting.

Happy to gather feedback and answer any questions about our game, or Godot!

Update: We now have a Steam page! https://store.steampowered.com/app/2643290/Oblin_Party?utm_source=godot_discord&utm_campaign=steam_page_announcement&utm_medium=web

Hey this looks pretty cool! I like the minimalistic artstyle and the particles 😄

This looks sick, have you guys added much since?

this looks ridiculously fun. if you end up making it multiplayer, please also consider making it cross platform

Hahaha thats so nice. Is the plan to keep it like 1on1 or how many are you planning to have per match? It's looking really fun so far

# bronze kiln Hi, your game is very nice! I tried to make physics-based legs like in rounds ga...

Sure! The legs are procedurally drawn, we've created them by using two rigid body segments per leg, plus one body for the foot. These bodies are completely collisionless (but react to gravity normally) and pinned together with pin joints, and we use a raycast to determine where the feet should step. To keep the foot where it stepped we also use a pin joint to anchor it there, and release it if the leg stretches too far or if a new step position has been determined. Based on the position of these rigid body segments we then draw the legs on top, with a quadratic bezier curve created as a Line2D node.

heh, yeah this runs at a solid 120 FPS on my dev machine, GPUParticles2D is performing very well

#

just posted this on the Godot subreddit as well, I tried to see what would happen with 100,000 particles 😅

Oh one thing I just noticed: To me its not super clear how far you can go offscreen before you die.
And, as a second thing to possibly improve, even though when first watching it, I noticed that the one player went offscreen and then the other won, I deduced that P1 must have died offscreen, to others they might not realize that. So maybe also add like a small particle explosion coming from the direction the P1 went offscreen towards the screen center so that the other players see that someone just died offscreen

Like why for example would P1 die if P2 pulls the lever?

#

What does the lever do?

random fox
sick pebble

Yeah but you see what I mean? its not clearly communicated that it is

@random fox @sick pebble It's a bit hard to see in this particular clip, but what the lever does is change the direction of gravity (look at the ropes and you'll notice it). You do actually lose if you go offscreen, it's worth noting though that the clip is cropped on the sides so you can't really see the actual edges of the level here. That said, some kind of visual effect when you go offscreen will definitely help communicate this, we'll add something like that 👍

that's so dope!

#

perfect 👍

#

Ah and maybe if that fits your artstyle you can add a little arrow symbol (or ⬇️⬆️ ) to indicate that it changes gravity

#

Might not fit what you're going for but that an idea

Working on some changes for the punching in the game, which felt a bit too chaotic and uncontrolled.

Now you can instead hold the button to charge up the punch, while also entering this boxing-style guard position. 🥊

🎉 Big development milestone! 🎉

Our online mode is now fully functional and works very well in the conditions we've been able to test it on so far. We'll continue testing across different setups but there should hopefully only be some minor optimizations left to do at this point.

Here are some clips from our latest internal playtest that we did online, which also showcases the tweaks we made to the punch mechanic a couple weeks ago.

You can use your elastic arms to swing, slingshot, and parkour around the highly dynamic and chaotic maps. The game can be played with 2-4 players locally or online.
