#Would it be possible to get a Godot-4 specific threaded-help section?

It has been discussed here and there (#1035920349369487370, and in #1019644098258415728 I think) , but it's not bad to have it focused here.
I'm not against personally, it just needs to fit into a larger cohesive plan for all channels. But what's wrong with using a tag?
valid and understood. since I posted this I found the godot 4 tag in the threaded-help section. so there is already a solution for posting for help with godot-4 in a threaded way.
however it strikes me that there is a bit of a conflict between the people that want to post about godot-4 development and people looking for community knowledge since the docs aren't done yet.
having a threaded help section specifically for godot-4 might make populating the docs easer in the long run and de clutter the godot-4 channel a little.
I was about to ask to enable threads in the #godot-4-chat channel, since right now with the betas there are like 300 messages every 12 hours, many of which are back and forth on how do to things, how functions were renamed or assorted bugs.
It would be much easier to follow if we could use threads, I think...
tags work, but they have the downside of not everybody using them, and (maybe thats a personal thing but I find it so) if you are only qualified answering questions about either 3 or 4, not both, it makes it a bit harder to just look over the posts and decide if thats something you can help with, as you also need to check the tag first (and then the op forgot to put it)
with godot 3 and 4 being used in parallel for, I guess a while now, and being different enough that it's important which one you use, I'd actually suggest having 2 general help categories specifically named godot 3 and godot 4 with each a text channel for general help, a beginner forum and an advanced forum
project help can be moved to help-by-topic since it's more longterm focused and involved, so tags should be enough there
threaded-help would not be needed anymore since forums are available. thats 6 vs the current 5 channels, so not too bad
it will make it especially easy for beginners (who are also the ones not using tags much) to just go into the category that matches their godot version...
I'd just like to chime in and say that I'd appreciate a separation. There's a Godot 4 (Beta) tag but it's at the end and from my count over the past two days, only half the posts actually asking a question about godot 4 had the godot 4 tag. Granted the threaded help isn't used so much but it's nice when there's some forced categorization, especially as godot 4 gets through rc and to release.
As an example, when someone asks a question about shaders or scripts, it's nice to be able to reply with working code instead of a bland answer to work on both or possibly confusing them by replying with the wrong syntax. (It's easy. Add a Node3D and write a script saying @export ... what's a Node3D. Oh you're on godot 3)
ok, then I'll rename #1019643735153328138 to godot-3-help, and create godot-4-help
Does that sound sensible?
it does, same treatment for text channels?
That's a lot of text channels
how about:
-
general help godot 3
- beginner (text)
- advanced (text)
- forum (old threaded-help)
-
general help godot 4
- beginner (text)
- advanced (text)
- forum (old threaded-help)
project-help moves to help-by-topic (or discussions? 🤔 wherever you think it fits best). since it's supposed to be more involved tags should do it there, people who read there pay more attention I presume
this is only one channel more then currently and a clear separation between 3 and 4
later, when 4 takes over beginner/advanced-2 can be added and the whole 3 section reduced down to only one channel and that eventually removed when 3 isn't used anymore
main advantages I see: it's instantly clear if the person asking a question is using 3 or 4
people who are only familiar with either of them can just go to the respective channels. no more "oh you are using 4? there it's characterbody3d"
for those who can help with both, the total number of channels to watch stays the same (2 beginner 2 advanced)
Ive also been banging my head at some problems people have in beginners only for them to casually mention they use 4 after being asked about their version. It wastes a lot of time and some other question might be lost in all the text. With Godot 4 getting closer and closer and more people trying the beta this will only get worse :/
as far as I've read there will be a 3.6 Long Term Support version after 4 is released. So version 3 won't disappear so soon
