This doesn't make much sense to me. I created the rock texture in substance designer. The cylindric version of it is a 3D preview feature in substance designer, NOT a 3D asset!!
Also the photo with the plane in it is showcasing the texture! This hand painted texture took me 6 hours to make. The reason why I showed it on a 3D model was just so you could actually understand what the end result looked like. It just feels like the person who reviewed this didn't really look at more than the first link.

I would definitely still work on personal projects though. Even if you don't plan to get comms, working on your own things is a great way to get more experience and improve. It also allows you to have more creations to show off [which is what you need for the skill role essentially].

You can look through the hireable channel of the respective skill, for example if you applied to be a Graphics Artist you could look in #graphics-hirable and see what people that have the skill have made.
It might not be the same work they've used for their application, but it's still usually around the same quality as it would've been in their application's examples.
