I do that too lol, for me it’s to make sure that if I have to change anything or add extra stuff on it, I wouldn’t have to put more hassle into it and just work with the specific area instead. I’m also a really anxious artist so in case I don’t like the way I shaded another thing differently, I delete it or hide it asap without disturbing other places that are shaded
The only downside for me with that is that I end up with 300+ layers in the end and sometimes I start lagging
That’s when I have to start merging things that are already finished and delete the hidden layers I don’t need anymore

Like I said, it’s less hassle and also doesn’t disturb any other shaded parts of the area
for example ure rendering an eye, if you render all of the eyes’ components in the same layer, you can’t lasso tool your way out without it looking messy and disturbing the other rendered parts of the eye
and sometimes u just want to change the colour of ur eye too

i think the problem is that its drawn with airbrush
usually when the light source is behind something, it leaves a rim of light rather than a blurry ring if that makes sense? i took this image off google and u can see how the light is SHARP on the edge
i also reccomend marco bucci's video on edges and light to help u
