when im just makin an illustration i usually paint all in one layer and only ever use layers if they subjects are completely separate like background and a subject then id use 2-3 layers
80% of my brushstrokes is this round brush. I also use airbrush, lasso select tool, and liquify. And sometimes textured brushes; Here are the main 2 i use if i do ever use texture burshes.

i have one example of luffy i made like 2weeks ago, after i was done with the layer i added a bunch of post effects layers such as glow effects, particles, vignette, watermarks, noise etc. thats usually the only process of the art where i make many seperate layers just so i can prettify it.

also a speed art. The way i approach coloring n nearly everything in the drawing like the pose, i just draw over the parts i dont like. I sometimes keep backups of old drawings incase the new one looks bad but thats pretty much it.

for the gif i sent previously i used a completely diff way of drawing/coloring i used many seperate layers for each part so i can animate them easily. The type of animation im doin is called tweening animation if ur curious.

Programs i use are:
clip studio paint - main drawing program
krita - mostly for gamepasses and batch exports
spine2d & Dragonbones - for 2d tweening animation

if u do wanna learn special techniques or other ways to do art, my advice is to use twitch.tv, many professional level artists draw there and u can learn so much from them if you copy what they do and turn it into ur own style.

The minimum layer approach was something i noticed trent kaniuga used a lot in his speedpaint videos so i copied it. Marc brunet is also great especially if ur stuck with the more psychological aspect of makin art
