Make the shape first, color, then finer details. I don’t know if that’s how other people do it but it’s how I do it

And for gradients I usually start with stage image having solid colors that I like first then turning them into gradients (which use that solid color as one of the colors for the gradient)

Because changing gradients is much more of a hassle than changing solid colors
