#NTSC VC on PAL Wii: Classic Controller left stick Polling(?) Issue

Hello all,

I'm encountering a strange issue where, while playing virtual console games on my PAL Wii (all of which are currently NTSC) the left stick will register as in the neutral position for a split second, recurring every couple of seconds. In Super Mario 64, this results in Mario jerking backwards every couple of seconds, and in the Wii Home Menu the cursor will similarly stutter during otherwise completely smooth motion.

The issue does not seem to occur in the system menu, gamecube games or when using WiiWare such as Cave Story. It also does not occur when using a GameCube controller. Swapping wii remotes and classic controllers seems to have no effect.

The WADs were re-installed using YAWM:ME

What could be causing this and is there an easy fix?

Cheers.

You may also have to adjust language settings

Will do! ...some 9 hours from now, have to work first. Tell ya if it works!

green slate
# final zephyr Try launching them through usbloader GX, and enable force pal video with them

Update: The issue occurs on the PAL version of Super Mario 64 as well. The issues occur whether the wad is launched by the system menu or USB Loader GX. The issues also occur whether the video mode is interlaced or progressive.

At this point I'd assume this to just be a bug baked into the virtual consoles' classic controller support, but I can only find one other mention of the issue through google search: https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wii/very_bizarre_super_mario_64_vc_bug_when_using_cc_pro

Could you potentially test it? (Only if you have nothing better to do and want to play some Mario 64 :)

In the pal version I cannot force pal 480p, so 50hz, in the NTSC version I'm using 60hz.

#

I'm connected via the mayflash HDMI adapter. I wouldn't have assumed this would cause polling issues as it's just processing an analog stream as it receives it (?) But I'll try with no GameCube memory cards inserted and/or a different cable

The Wii only has three settings: 480i 576i and 480p. It is on the latter.

#

But thank you!

#

I don't think this a video issue anyway though

#

When Mario jerks backwards he's doing the "sudden stop" animation. The actual input's being dropped

Ooh where should I be?

final zephyr
#

I can’t remember what it’s called lol

#

I am American that’s why

#

Was it screen type?

#

Oh

#

TV type

green slate
#

(sorry for abysmal focus) my TV seems to think I'm running 60hz (and changed accordingly when running pal mario 64)

final zephyr
#

Settings>Screen>TV type

green slate
#

Ja.

#

That's what I'm changing :P

final zephyr
#

So in the game loader you would force PAL60 when playing the NTSC game

green slate
#

It is on game mode, heh

final zephyr
#

Damn

green slate
#

Makes a big difference for progressive content, not so much for interlaced

#

Besides, playing Super Mario 64 NTSC causes the TV to correctly switch to 480i and the issue persisteth

final zephyr
#

I don’t know I’m very confused

green slate
#

:(

#

I'm fairly convinced it's a bug in this particular wad, I just need someone else to say they're experiencing it or its a know bug and I'll rest easy.

#

Do you have the game and does it do such things?

final zephyr
green slate
#

Darn

#

Removing sensor bar and GameCube accessories made no difference

#

Could be something wrong with my console but then why would the issue only present in virtual console games?

green slate
# final zephyr Works fine for me

I know you're busy but could you please confirm that

A: You can see Mario doing the weird jerking in this video and

B: You do not experience this issue?

final zephyr
#

I don’t have that problem while playing

green slate
#

Arrrrrrrrrgh

#

Thank you

final zephyr
green slate
#

But I just want it to worrrrrrk

#

Or at least know why it wonnnnnnnt

final zephyr
#

Usually launching the virtual console title via usbloader GX with force PAL60 on works

green slate
#

Peculiar indeed

final zephyr
#

I think someone had a similar issue a while back on a different server

#

I don’t think they ever found a fix either

green slate
#

Despair. I have another Wii. Maybe sometime I'll find the time to hack that and test.

Wii.guide is owned by riiconnect24 and Wii.hacks.guide is owned by Nintendo homebrew

green slate

Is one more biased than the other or do they enforce accuracy through competition?

#

Very interesting to know

final zephyr

Ah, I see. Cheeky.

Also unfortunate. I feel I'd better not inquire further for peace of mind. I will say I did notice a lot of riiconnect stuff I wasn't especially interested in

Today the problem seems to be significantly reduced or absent. I have no idea what happened.
