I followed the guide on the https://wii.guide/riiconnect24.html, and after downloading the patcher for Windows through GitHub, whenever I try to run it - the cmd pops up for a split second and then closes. I tried to follow the advice/solutions from others who have experienced the same problem, but nothing seems to work. Any help would be really appreciated.
#RiiConnect24Patcher.bat immediately exits after running it.

What is your language set to on the computer and what windows version are you using
My OS is Windows 10 Home, and my initial system language was Ukrainian. I also tried following the guide while also having English as my default system language, but that also didn't work. I even tried setting my system language as French and German - none of these worked for me.
I might be wrong, but lately i had to install curl for something wii related under windows, might have been the rc24 patcher
Would help if your shells isnt closing immediately, to make it possible to read the error message if you got one
Open the shell and navigate to that place where you did store the patcher batch file and execute it from there.
All of the attempts of running the bat file where done on my desktop. Are you asking about what the shell displayed before closing immediately?
i mean cmd, if you go the script on your desktop, its most likely "cd desktop"
just navigate inside of the cmd to the place where you stored the script
im a linux user, its just my assumption that the cmd shows an error message but doesnt give you any time to read it
Weird. English should have worked
When I run the bat file, it shows me the cmd window with some text before closing immediately.
yes, thats what im talking about
it doesnt close the cmd window it you did open it manually before starting the script
It does not show any errors before or after running it
the error will be shown in side the cmd, when its closing straight you dont have time to read it, but im sure there will be something you can read that gives you a hint whats wrong, my guess is something the script wants to use isnt installed it and just stops
my guess would be curl, which is used to download stuff via http
just had a look at the script, and its using curl
im not sure if you can follow me
-
open the start menu (or however its called these days in windows), click into the search bar and type "cmd" and press enter
-
type "cd desktop" and press enter
-
i assume the rc24 script is saved on your desktop, type "RiiConnect24Patcher.bat" and press enter
Okay, so I ran the script directly from the cmd, and it shows no errors before or after it is automatically closes itself
the script is closing your cmd that you did open before starting the script" that shouldnt happen at all
I might look through the bat file and try to look for an answer myself
i had a look its quite long
you should see some text in your shell when its starting, giving you a version number and those kind of things, it waits for some input
i can see some strings that say "downloading curl". so i guess i might download curl if it doesnt find it.
Of course still needs something to download curl with..
But anyways, you should get some kind of output when the script runs.
ok... "We will now open a website that will download curl.exe." so you still have to download it manually.
and yeah, i think you wont find much inside of the batch file that might help you, because the batch file works, what helps you is reading the output of the batch file in your cmd when its running
I recorded the video of the bat file running in slow-mo, and I think I might have found the culprit, but that would be my wild guess
The first cmd window had:
"Starting up...
The program is starting...
Setting up the variables"
it then closes and opens another window with different text:
".. Loading language: English...
.. Downloading the latest translation files..."
The window then closes and nothing happens after that
download curl for windows here, its a zip archive i guess, take the "curl.exe" from that archive and place it where the batch script is, just for testing
if you want the more pretty way, copy the whole curl folder somewhere and add this folder to you $PATH variable
but thats not necessary for a quick n dirty test
Do you know where the exe file contains exactly?
i think the zip has a bin folder, its inside there
seems like the rc24 patcher script has too much bling bling, and too less correct error handling...
i may with curl around or not, if it doesnt, you still dont get a proper error message as it seems
Can't seem to find the bin folder, or the curl.exe file for that matter
let me check
the filename on that website is curl-7.88.1_2-win64-mingw.zip
there is a bin folder inside that has the curl.exe
where exactly can I find this zip file?
https://curl.se/download.html scroll down to the builds for windows
i did use the first 64bit windows builds
okay, found the exe file
I extracted and put it on my desktop, next to my patcher bat file
should I run curl.exe, or the bat file again?
the batch again
already ran it
my guess is, the moment it start to download something, doesnt find the curl.exe and crashes
Well that was worth a shot
I think I'll try to look for any mentions of this "English translation" file in the patcher - not sure if it even will help me with anything, but I'd better try
i think your problem is the missing output of the batch script
everything else you try while being blind is a wild guess
and if the language is really a problem, doesnt really speak for it...
so, i think its unlikely, should always work with english in doubt
and yeah, maybe opening a new window from inside the script that has fixed dimensions and what not makes it look nice for those ascii art, and those other bling bling stuff.. but its also the reason why you dont see much now after it crashes... so... yeah...
UPDATE: I think I figured out my problem. I looked around inside the patcher's code for the "English translation" file that it supposedly needs to work properly. Apparently, when you run the patcher, it downloads another bat file in the temp folder in your user, and from that file it runs everything else
After I looked around inside that file, I quickly realised what the actual problem was
To explain what's in this file: It's an html code of when you're trying to access the site that is blocked by the country your in (in my case, that would be Ukraine).
Basically, whenever you want to visit a site that is blocked in Ukraine, you get this screen instead of what you were trying to look up
Now the question is - why would the country I live in restrict access to the web servers with the translation file
If I remember correctly, most if not all of the riiconnect files and services are hosted on the servers in the US, and this "ACCESS IS RESTRICTED" screen usually shows up whenever you try to visit any website or service in Russia
i think downloading some random batch files and executing them should be a no go in general...
and why the heck does it need to download an english language file? is windows so crappy that it cant show english characters on a non english windows installation?
Would it be a good idea to ask the one who made the patcher directly about this problem, or would that be a big no no?
well, you can try
but to be honest, i got a mail related problem with rc24, tried all kinds of stuff, even bought a second wii to have a better look at it, then created a discord account, wrote a post here, and days later, nobody cares
seems like most people here are busy to help people who dont give a crap about rc24, get their wii running some "free games"
I'm not sure what the connection between riiconnect24 and "free games", but I can understand where you're coming from
there is none. thats the point
the rc24 support seems to be busy with mostly non rc24 related stuff
I actually used a lot of riiconnect24 several years back, especially with my family members (we all loved the mii contest/check mii out channel), but then life got in the way and I became to busy to care about my poor good old wii
You could try pinging kcrpl
i did sent him a message, 1-2 days ago
Is it okay to do? Are the developers okay with them being pinged about such problems?
i mean i know, i complain a lot
but i didnt had a wii back then, bought mine a few years ago second hand, and discovered rc24 a half year ago, and i think its just great what has been achieved, can use a wii again like its 2009 and get the full experience
but seeing that this place is mostly helping people who mostly dont care about rc24 at all and just wanna play their pirated games is a bit sad
i mean there was a thread like 2 days ago wher ethe first message was like "i just wanna play some pirated games"
I recently found time and picked up wii again, but the riiconnect24 service was no longer working
should be ok, i mean why not?
So I followed the guide again, tried to complete the steps, and now I am here
He probably doesn’t check dms
Ok, I'll try to ping him to this support thread
im new to discord, so a personal message made sense to me
to be honest, i heard the term "pinging" the first time just now 😆
@lament matrix I have problems with my patcher and it seems that the issue is with downloading the Language_English.bat file
It seems that whenever the patcher tries to download the localization file, it is immideately blocked by my country
It would be much appreciated if you could assist me with solving such problem at hand.
I think as long as it’s not spamming it’s probably fine
On the patcher it DOES say to contact him so
Also for the Wii numbers he’s the only one with access to the database
Idk what Larsen is doing nowadays
i had a talk with someone yesterday who just did the guide and asked him if he also has the mail issue, and he did, so my guess is a lot may have this issue, so a single database fix for just one wii number is maybe not a good long term solution
i really like rc24 and i would just love to see that working
@lament matrix any thoughts
Oh someone already pinged u 👁️👄👁️
If I might be truly honest - all of my Wii game library is technically "pirated"
I got the Wii when I was really young and I had finally saved all of my money to buy the console myself. The only game I could play on it was "Mario & Sonic at 2012 London Olympic Games" (yes, I have the blue cucked wii without the gamecube support)
its a different thing when someone openly advertises it like "i just wanna play some pirated games" and the guys say.. no problem let us help you with your stuff... helps nintendo lawyers... and maybe puts rc24 at risk
So when I asked for more games on my Wii, the only solution I had at that time was to ask some old grumpy stranger to mod my console and install the games for money, since there was no way of buying the physical discs with games at that time
I'm not sure if Nintendo even knows the existence of the RiiConnect24, but it is concerning of how it is perceived nowdays
i think they know there there are some people who revived something that they killed before, and i dont think they got a problem with it, just shows that they did a lot right with the wii and that it still has a lot fans these days, but maybe this place here should focus a bit more on rc24 and make sure it doesnt become some warez support site.. lol
i mean kudos who spents their time here to help all those people who cant do some RTFM
even my mom could mod a wii with the guide.. but some people need to be hold by hand and spoon fed
Everyone who offers support here is a volunteer. They have no other way of contributing to rc24 idk what you're ranting about
hold by hand... spoon fed... why does that remind me of someone?
...Oh right, 'cause that's me - i'm the man-child
@arctic nebula if you can stop going off topic in people's support threads that'd be great. Please be direct with your support or stay out of it
i get that, and i have no problem with it, its good when people try helping, but often i get the impression that the people who ask for help thought its easier to ask straight then doing some innitial homework first, because its still time of other people they use
Understood. Will keep my message's now on the point and brief. Sorry for getting a bit distracted
ok, sorry for crossing the line, im out
I'm just busy and don't have time to read all the nonsense to get the thread closed, sorry.
It's okay, that's understandable
@whole bolt
I DMed you the alternative to using the RiiConnect24 patcher.
