Well, with soft mods you want the quickist live launcher like super smash bros. melee. That save exploit gets into the menu like super fast, then directly to swiss and load games from sd gecko or the micro sd card adaptor for the sp2 slot first gen gamecubes had that went unused, it has faster read speeds and is recommeded for memory card emulation. If you wanna use real memory cards ur fine with sd gecko
Animal corssing exploit is the worst super long loading times xD
For hard mod you just solder a Raspberry Pi zero to the bios and bing bata boom
No save exploit, no dvd drive needed
I have melee and working dvd drive so its not really needed for me

Retroarch is cool, with dolphin emu save sync you can make someone think there netplaying melee with you, then go to Dr. Mario or warios woods

The reason you shouldn't do it with the game off sd gecko is cause it's not fast enough to read data off the disk and save data to a memory card it can corrupt the memory card
