I feel in the current state of the game the helium pumps fit oddly in the game's sandbox, being no more expensive than an air pump and not gaining a huge amount of lift, though I could just not have enough experience in the game.
However, with the new flammability mechanics, we could add a hydrogen pump to the game. A hydrogen pump would increase the flammability of all connected pumps and otherwise take all the attributes of the regular helium pump, while the helium pump could have an increase in cost and buoyancy.
Another odder suggestion would be a "water pump" in order to allow an airship to quickly lower, since naturally they are quite light.
A further suggestion would be to make these new pumps scale to the volume they fill, making every block ~0.02 mats for Hydrogen and ~0.05 for Helium, allowing for Airships to distinguish themselves from a standard hovercraft.

Helium pumps are vastly more powerful than air pumps. (but leak faster)
You can confiqure the responders by pressing Q on these to react to an axis such as hover. Then it will increase or decrease the power to gain or lose altitude.
Ah fair, just thought it was a silly idea since we have fire mechanics.
I suggested this already and I got laughed at lol
It's a cool idea but balance wise airships are already at a severe disadvantage. Making them flammable is just kicking something that is already down 😄
While this is a dumb idea, it would allow for the construction of the Hindenburger, which would be funny as fuck
I'm honestly inclined to support this idea because of how hilarious it would be
We need hydrogen pumps as a cursed third option
YES
Yeah, what I'm suggesting is to make Helium stronger as to have viable airships while also having hydrogen as a cost effective option
Also I want Hindenburger
(Also it would be funny to ram a giant flaming bomb into an enemy)
It doesn't need to be stronger you just need to use alloy. Look on the workshop there are already tons of airships
I'd say keep helium pumps as they are. IIf anything, add hydrogen pumps as a more powerful option that gives more buoyancy per volume but adds flammability. Not for combat craft, mostly.
I really like helium pumps, though. Mostly not for combat craft, but for backline craft. Helium + sails gives incredibly efficient cargo-haulage craft, costing zero materials to move and dodging the huge upfront cost of RTGs.
I SECOND THIS! id love even more bouyancy for added risk. the more bouyancy could let you put more weight on while still being airborne but adds risk of conflaguration when present.
theres be some questions on how to implement the flammability - should every block containing the hydrogen volume havea flammability debuff? and/or should leaks just naturally spawn and fuel fires on blocks surrounding the leak? and/or should the whole vessel just get a flammability debuff depending on how much volume of hydrogen there is present on it?
I don't think it works into ftd. Besides you can make your airships out of thin alloy and that's enough critical failure to fire for a day
(you can just make it if something opens the hidrogen, it all just vanishes, and the hole gets fire with fuel equivalent to the hidrogens volume)
This should be an April fools addition
