As for specific tips on what to do? This probably isn't a definite list but getting commends (and therefore higher rank) makes people not as likely to suspect you as an alt. People will be less suspicious of you on a frontline than if you're in the backlines doing stuff. (At least I think?)

Best way to get commends is to delivery supplies to frontlines, it gives a prompt to players to commend you.

It isnt really that modern of a uniform though, look at military caps from the time of Napoleon, e.g. British's shakos where popular if tall but shorter caps were used by other sections of the populace.

Also it looks like he has a mantle on his shoulder that could be a riding cloak, the silver chain is the give away although the sash is a bit of a cover up.
