The winter storms are new, you'll see snow accumulate on your character as you get colder. You can warm up by a fire or slowly in a building or trench. If that little thermometer in the top left turns a darker colour of blue that means you need to get warm immediately or you're going to die

You don't necessarily need to worry about joining a squad right away, people usually make those for a specific group or operation. Like someone else said, just going to the front lines with a rifle is a good start and it's the sort of game where you can't know everything all at once so you learn as you go
