This means that they're betting the price is going to keep going down. So they sell the stock today, and say "We'll buy it back from you in say, 1 week at whatever price it is then". If the stock goes down, they make the difference. (Sell for $10, it goes down to $6, they make $4).
So a bunch of different people, mostly centered around reddit, decided, hey, let's buy a bunch of this stock, make the price go way up, and make a ton of money because those hedgefunds have to buy the stock back on X day. (Friday). So they sold the stock for $10, but now have to buy it back for say, $50. This means they lose $40 on each stock.
In reality with gamestop they've been shorting the stocks at like, $2 a stock, and saying they'll do that for more stocks than exist in gamestop, and now they're going to have to rebuy them at like.. $350 a stock?
So they're losing tens of billions of dollars.
