Well think about it. what if you can drink or join the military. and drinking ruins your capacity for the military?

At some level, it may just be a tactic to keep the best men available as good recruits.

Drinking is intensely unhealthy and virtually nobody should do it.

there are obviously times when soldiers do not drink or where a bit of alcohol could help them stay calmer.

Also, if they leave the military with PTSD and its illegal to drink, that could cause problems. (yes drinking is a problem but thats a different topic).
