I am trying to load the game to play. However, I am only able to get passed the login page and then I try to click play but it won't do anything.

My advice is use the normal application on the own computer.

no, I don't agree with you. Steam is a third part, the game download is identical for any platform and each platform gets it for download from ea server.
if you find more bugs through third parties the EA company can pass the responsibility to the third party as well, for this reason it is better to have little to do with third parties.
You do not have to agree with me. I understand that steam is a third party. However, I couldn’t play when I downloaded the game from swtor website and couldn’t repair it like someone else on the server suggested so I downloaded it from steam and was able to play
