im interested in the answer to the first one two, for a madness sorc does force lightning count as periodic damage or just things like crushing darkness and affliction?
as for the mods i think just look into the stat boosts that each individual mod gives and what they do for you and you should be able to play it to your own preference

Peridoic damage is any ability that applies a dot to the opponent. So when you use an ability it leaves s debuff to them or you notice the effect on it says it does "damage over x amount of time"
As for armor. Armor does not matter in the slighest until endgame level 80 before then you can easily get with just the armor you pick up off missions
