#Losing quality in rendering to posting

Hi all,

I just started with this youtube thing. I’m still learning just about everything at this point but just posted my first video a few days ago. I noticed after rendering that i’d lost quite a bit of quality. It was most noticeable in the video footage of myself and when transitioning (the black screens were pixelly). For context, I use a Rebel T5 (EOS Webcam Software) and OBS to record and Davinci Resolve for editing and rendering. I thought I matched everything up to that I needed to (1920x1080p) and even tried following tutorials and rendering several times but its still shite.

I am working on my second script right now and hoping to record within the week so any help would be lovely. Thank you!!

A couple random shot questions here to knock off a couple easy issues to fix:

  • Are you sure your render is 1080? And youre recording in 1080 as well? Make sure both DV and OBS have the output or the export settings set to 1080 (sometimes its not actually)
  • Whats your bitrate in OBS? And is it constant or variable? (CBR, VBR, etc?)
  • EOS is well... probably where I think a hbig issue here is. The Rebel T5 is NOT the best. At all. Its capped at 720 and it's not all that good fr pixeling. You could try higher (with a lower ISO, maybe), but the quality wont improve, just the ratio your recording in

let me know if you have any questions

@fringe sinew I can double check the settings but i think its all set for 1080.

As far as bitrate, this is news to me haha so i’ll have to look into it. What should it be set to?

I was worried that the main issue was the camera. Do you think I should upgrade cameras like getting a T7 or do away with EOS all together? Money isnt of major concern id just not like to sink too much this early on.

It depends, is a camera really important in your niche? and if so how about the quality? Maybe for a talking-head video but not so much for gaming

#

I'd say that camera needs a ton of lighting and honestly its not worth it (its pretty ancient tech too now a days). Youd be better off just using your phone

silent flame

Yeah my computer is solid. I may consider a 4k webcam as a cheaper option. It will be a mix of talking head, I plan to talk about horror media and the like. My phone is also shite, its an XR, haha. I appreciate the help though!!!

EOS Webcam utility limits cameras to 576p

It's really fine unless you're recording a lot of fullscreen cam

Do you have any pics/samples of the quality issue?

Well lucky for you, that's what I wanted to see

Honestly you might just be out of focus

# silent flame I should clarify that i have pro not just regular EOS utility. If you also have ...

What do you want to use that camera for? Any specific features you want? What price range? I would stay away from webcams if you already have a DSLR, even your phone is better than most if not all webcams. 4k doesn't make for a better image automatically. Just plugging in a camlink or if your camera supports it, running magic lantern could improve a lot as well. But lighting is even more important, though that depends on your use case

fringe sinew
#

It’s free in the sense that you probably have one and it’s probable a good camera

#

If you start going down the rabbit hole of cameras, the unfortunate truth is I can’t help you there, but most cameras need a ton of lighting. Until you figure out that you’re going to have issues with noise and dark spots. And if Ben thinks that you’re just out of focus here, maybe it could be that

Price range? It really all depends. I probably wouldnt want to pay boujee DSLR prices at this point though. I was thinking more of like a 4k webcam. Any ideas incase the below isnt adequate?

Tested out magic lantern with some settings i could find online and it seemed to make a difference for sure! I still wanna see what things look like after getting a capture card like you suggested. Thank you! @tiny stone

What's stopping you from just recording straight up in camera/phone?

silent flame
maiden plinth
#

What about on the camera though?

fringe sinew
#

That is painful but understandable

I'll double down then - Why are we recording in OBS in the first place?

silent flame
maiden plinth
#

(This is nitpicky I know, but your camera doesn't shoot RAW video)

#

Alright good luck with it!

OHHHH

#

Nice.

#

Unwrapped SD card going right into the slot. How daring of you

silent flame
#

There it is, he gets it, haha!

Also, to be double dog nitpicky, now that I have Magic Lantern, the T5 can shoot RAW. Hey, im just learning though 🤷🏽‍♂️.

# tiny stone It does tho

It doesn't stock, but as you've both explained now, you've got Magic Lantern going so you can now so I happily stand corrected

My one thing how much of pain that will be with editing.

What are your pain points?

tiny stone
#

Well, if you are shooting cinema dng, it's a bit of a pain... But not really editing but transfering files

maiden plinth
#

How so?

tiny stone
#

Every single frame is saved as an image file. Pretty big raw images. Meaning anything you record is gonna have a ton of files and these cards are slow at moving a lot of files. To be fair, even SSDs are bad at this

maiden plinth
#

Image sequence? Damn.

#

I thought it just did .MLV

tiny stone
#

Maybe it can now, it's been quite a few years since I had to use magic lantern

maiden plinth
#

Pretty sure Davinci and Premiere can take dngs as well so hopefully it won't be too bad for Patty

silent flame
#

For me itd be cutting out bad takes and lining things up with the footage from movies I wanna show or other media I am trying to throw on screen.

I think i could just watch it through and then cut out the bad takes fairly easily in Davinci but then considering that itd be one large item in the media pool instead of manageable segments. Then having to line up the audio and all the other steps that single recordings.

Share thoughts though. This shit is all new, I almost died when I saw the fusion tab in Davinici, dont feel ready at all to use it haha.

maiden plinth
#

Lining up audio is pretty easy, just clap a few times

Grabbing and editing b roll is not gonna change regardless of how you record

You can always ask me for editing software advice

I'd add that if your camera has any kind of garbage, unusable in-camera audio, you can usually use that pretty safely to auto sync the video and audio. you could record either a single long video or small segments still just because you are recording into the camera. I'm pretty sure you can even get a simple remote (tho I'm not sure if it's compatible with magic lantern or not) And don't worry, you probably won't even have to touch fusion if you don't want to

silent flame
#

No luck finding a controller (or an app) but between both your advice, I think I can figure it out. I got a camlink just incase if I feel like it’s giving me too many troubles, if not all return it.

Im sure it will be a pain at first (cause im still getting the hang of this whole thing) but I don’t imagine it’d being too terribly different. I could simply just cut the footage after so many lines/takes. I got a teleprompter too so it’ll only make getting a good take easier. Cheers though, thank you both! @tiny stone @maiden plinth

maiden plinth
#

No worries, enjoy!

#

There is a canon app I've used before if you wanted a remote btw

(And damnit I'm jealous 'cause I don't have a camlink)

silent flame
maiden plinth
#

It's just called "Canon Camera Connect"

#

Uhh wellll I'll happily swap ya for my 1080p cheapo card haha
