#Mic Comparison: Shure Sm58 vs El Gato Wave 3.

I believe the noise suppression is cranked up a bit with the sm58 compared to the elgato

The elgato is sounding a lot more "bright".

I stand by the elgato softare being very versatile, but in the context of "desk content creation" the sm58 would likely win in a raw test with a good interface. I'm unsure of the quality of your interface or it's settings so I cannot really judge fully.

Do YOU have a preference? Which one do you feel suited your voice more?

Being a dynamic mic, the sm58 will have better noise rejection as well.

It’s a very generic one: https://a.co/d/5brj3o4

I’m using audacity in these samples. I think the dynamic mic is suppressing input on its, own, too.

Genuinely, I have zero idea what I doing. I’m partially deaf in both ears so, I can’t really hear any “artifacts” for lack of better word. I rely heavily on noise suppression tools and visuals to ensure I’m at least getting some decent audio 🙈

My plan was/is to use the wave el gato 3 for talking head videos, and the sm58 for voice overs. I am going to tests the iPhone with the ride micro and generic wireless usb/c I have with the noise suppression feature for mobile recordings. That said, I really should learn how to edit audio post edit for the G85 I am using as my main camera. Just trying to guide out the lighting situation. I’ll post video samples for feedback soon. 🫶🏻

Yeah, I think a raw recording would be much better comparison. That sm58 clip sounded nothing like how the sm58 should sound like. if you are not live streaming, I see no benefit in baking in noise suppression into the audio file when you could fine tune it perfectly in post and change your mind about setting at any point. neither mic is made for talking head videos (unless you are okay seeing them in the shot) if your room is sound treated the elgato wave 3 might sound more natural for that but otherwise the sm58 will win. you could always sync the audio and the video regardless of what camera you are filming on

I’m not opposed to having some videos recorded at my desk, so I don’t really mind having something like this:

I know this isn't the camera chat, but that is also a perfect example of the framing stuff I was telling you about haha

I’m learning so much these past few days. Y’all, especially Ben, I can’t thank you enough.

# gray gull I’ll will revisit the sm58 with raw recordings to compare. Thanks! My room is no...

the rode video micro would only work if you boompole mounted it above/below you just out of frame. and even that will not sound great indoors, in an untreated room. Shotgun mics are generally for outdoors use one, on boompoles. lav mics can sound better because they are close to the sound source so potentially they won't record so much of the environment (but you need to be somewhat loud for that). at the same time, the quality is never as good as large mics because of their size simply. (still a more expensive one will sound perfectly acceptable) the best for external noise rejection is still the sm58 but you need to be speaking into it.
