I've been trying to improve my thumbnails for time but whatever I do, it's apparently, "not good enough" is there any specific criticisms which I can actually take on board

not good enough according to...? anyway, it helps to know the title of the video.

yep we need the title of the video

for now I can say the car is small and the txt can be a bit bigger as well (cos there's anyways dead-space), but first just make that car way bigger 😛 (and tell us the title!)

If the video title is "playing this game or this map but in reverse" or something like that, you want something more enticing to help the viewer click on your video. Right now it's just a bit blunt, not many colors, small text with ordinary font, not enough contrast, not something for the eye to focus on. I would take a close-up shot of the car from the front and apply some visible wind currents to show the direction it's going and put a a big REVERSE? somewhere on the screen. Remember to always assume that your viewers don't need more information, you want the right mix of information and ambiguity.

the video title is:

playing this game or this map but in reverse

?

#

why not just the name of the game? instead of "this game or this map"

#

make a choice, between "this map or this game", or is it not sure yet what the video is about?

You want your thumbnail to pop out

@oblique orbit if you want it to pop more, make sure the color of your text contrasts against the background

#

You can do that by adding a stroke around the letters (white or black generally works best)

There is a stroke

#

Is it good enough

As well as making sure the color is very different from the background it's on

#

The eye is drawn to contrast so with all the details in the background it takes away some of the attention from the car and the letters

But the background is blue and the font is red

Also all the elements in your thumbnail are very similar in size-- in the second one the car, logo and text all feel totally equally important

#

Try to make one bigger, one middle, one small

#

As a rule of thumb

#

Tends to be easier to follow

#

Yeah it is, but the text is also very close to the edge, and in the second one it's touching the edge of the horizon in the background

#

Look into 'visual tangents'

#

It'll help you know what to avoid

Ah I see
