Not an artist but I wanted to share my sonic oc. Her name is Zuri the cat and she's a tough cookie. I think her colors would be grayish brown with pink and lime idk. Tried to make a side view of her walking but then I realized ppl don't with the arms moving the same way as legs. I was inspired by Sue Ellen from Arthur and curly haired kittens. started doing a lot with photography than i thought i would and recently directed a little shoot for someone's side hustle. i currently only use like my phone and a little Canon digital camera from like 2006 tho sadly that camera doesn't have a video feature so i couldn't take a video of what i was doing (not that i would show it that would be doxxing) in my head it was sort of a late 2000s inspired shoot so a video would've made proper sense but didn't get one and that fine. i also liked the colour grading i did since i had never done proper colour grading with people or in this case garments as the subject of the photos so i quite liked how it turned out

hey gang long time no see!!! I just finished my second semester which was way more hectic and unsatisfying since this was a lot of prop design and 3D Modeling which I am insanely unfamiliar with. my strong points are flowing shapes and designs (characters, animals etc.) so safe to say this wasn’t an easy beginning. I stumbled quite a bit throughout BUT I definitely feel my design processes for my own characters getting more streamlined. I’ve actually finished up a lot of my original character designs and might even make character sprites/arts for them idk :3 overall not the easiest semester but definitely one with a LOTTT of learning

I'm not an artist I just like creating characters sometimes. Today I googled how to develop your own art style. But then I just started drawing when I finished I realized this style looks similar to the Elinor wonders why show. Is it unique enough to be differentiated? Anyways her name is Missy and she's a young tween goat that likes stargazing and helping her friends. I imagine her in like pilgrim type dresses with a color pallete of teal, a soft peach and cream. I didn't draw her ears because that's too hard because I don't know how to draw folds.

i think this is great!!! there’s really no such thing as an original art style, everything is inspired by something else. i’d recommend studying from life as much as possible; the more you understand how to draw real things, the more equipped you’ll be to stylize/cartoonify them

short answer: there is no way to dry it.

long answer: oil based modeling clays are incapable of being fired, baked, or "dried" in any way. if you were to try and 'seal' it with any gloss or varnish, you run the risk of leaching and/or just making a general mess with 'wet' clay. you have a few options from here on out:

if you are familiar with mold-making, you can place your project in the fridge for about 30 minutes to make it less malleable and easier to cast. with this, you can place either of the following clays into said mold:

1. use polymer clay to model from here on out. this will require the usage of an oven, or at least a toaster oven (not entirely recommended, but if you were to do so then invest in an oven thermometer to watch the temperature). there are various brands and product lines under said brands, and i can go into those if you want. however, if you aren't very familiar with clay in general i wouldn't recommend it to start right away.

2. in that case, air dry clay may be best. i've heard that model magic is very beginner friendly, but it isn't exactly like a heavy 'wetter' clay that may be in line with the clay you're working with right now in terms of texture. there's also an actual air dry clay under crayola, but im not familiar with it. i would recommend das over sculpey in terms of brands and workability. there is a learning curve with it but it's probably less annoying to deal with if you don't have the ability to use an oven.

assuming you aren't entirely familiar with making molds, i would at least recommend making different sculptures to get used to the feel of working with clay. not all clays will feel the exact same, even within clay types, but getting used to actually handling it will be helpful for when you want to move on. but unfortunately, to fully and finally answer the question, you won't be able to cure your project or seal it in any way.

u can even mimic oil texture cause acrylic is pretty thick

advice on gouache tho, its an odd one out (imo) and u need to work with it more like oil, in that u need to let a bottom layer dry out before putting a new one, because it's water-soluble so the bottom layer paint will simply come off if u dont let it dry first. also it doesnt blend like other paints thats why its used in a more cartoony style paintings

alcohol can be used with a brush or sculpting tool (or even your fingers, gently) to smooth the surface and remove fibres/debris from polymer clay. for air dry clay or standard natural clay for pottery water is recommended instead, because you rely on moisture to keep the clay from curing and alcohol can dry it out faster

i only use it on larger pieces. if i need to remove specs of dirt or anything on smaller pieces i just use a thin detail brush

TEACH ME HOW TO COLOUR LIKE GHIS

i’m not sure i’ll do a good job explaining how i colour but i’ll still try….. how i learned was 5% by reading theory and studying other artists’ works and 95% by pure trial and error, and i still make a lot of mistakes. i wish i at least had a speedpaint but i stopped recording them because they took a lot of space on my tablet 🤕

when colouring it’s important to pay attention to values, hues and saturation of your piece, and different colouring / painting techniques prioritise different things. i love impressionism, so my main priority are usually these things: complementary hues and their neighbours, hues over values, less saturated pastel colours and utilising light grey for contrast. here’s a b/w version of this drawing, as you can see it doesn’t have much going on in terms of values, the range is somewhere between very light grey and light grey.

what i do when i want to add contrast to a drawing is i focus more on local colours than how we perceive colours. colours are perceived in coordination with each other meaning that you can make people see brown where there is no brown just like in this painting “The Swing” by Pierre Auguste Renoir: the tree is anything but brown, it’s a combination of violet, blue, red hues but we see it as brown in correlation with everything else + because we know that trees are usually brown. impressionists mainly try to avoid earthy colours because they’re difficult to work with in this style without mudding up a drawing

i don’t really try to replicate this feeling of a colour when i colour as in trying to replicate the brown of a tree by colouring it violet and coordinating it with everything else in a picture. i focus on local colours and how they work with each other creating an illusion of a large values range when in reality i don’t really use values as much as i use hues. i usually choose my first colour based on skintone and how i see it, and it can be any hue you want: pink, orange, violet, blue, green, etc. then i depict how dark the skintone is (its values) by using saturation but still trying to stay somewhere under 50%. you can start with anything else besides the skintone, it depends on what is the main focus of your drawing, i like drawing portraits and people in general that’s why i start with it.

when i decide on my main hue, i also automatically decide which other hues i should use in a drawing, they’re always the corresponding complimentary hue + their closest neighbours. also about using greys: when you use grey of the same value, for example, while adding details to or something let’s say red in your drawing, grey can come off as greenish, and it goes the same way for complimentary hues and their neighbours. in many cases it’s better to use grey than a particular hue or else it may come off not as natural.

i also start drawing by putting down colours without a detailed sketch underneath (or without any sketch at all) and i only use one layer, it helped to stop overthinking every little detail and realise that if i need to fix anything i can just erase / colour it over and then do it from scratch, no big deal. after laying down the colours, i start adding details and near the end i use a pencil brush to add lines for contrast, they should be of the same hues as everything else in a drawing just a bit more saturated, no brown or black !! that’s important

i think that’s all, yeah………. i hope it all makes sense, ive never really studied it academically, it’s just two to three years of struggling to pinpoint what’s wrong with what i’m doing while drawing. if you have any questions, i’ll be glad to answer them!

tbh what helped me a lot is that i just changed the way i see colours, and it's an individual thing. it came to me after observing tons of works, and i mean like really a lot, and thinking hard about who my art parents might be. your choice of colours, your style and everything you do in a drawing will always be influenced by who you admire in the field

I work with the RAW versions of the photos in adobe lightroom and then export them as high-quality jpgs

I don't know the technical aspects of the matter tbh lol I learned from a teacher that you have to work with raw files to safeguard the quality

does anyone have a huion drawing tablet? (if specifically, the huion kamvas pro 16 (2.5k)) and would be willing to lmk how it runs/draws?

im looking to buy my own drawing tablet and i think its a good less expensive option for me but im really bad at understanding explanations through the videos ive watched since im a hands on learner

i have a huion kamvas 13 but i rarely use it because i prefer drawing on an ipad

in general, it’s a really good drawing tablet. its easy to set up when it comes to drivers and personalised settings, i love how it feels to the touch while drawing, especially while doing lineart + it comes with many spare tips for the pen. back in 2021 i was choosing between it and wacom one, and huion kamvas 13 was much cheaper than wacom one while being better when it came to a few settings (for example, it has twice as much pressure sensitivity levels as wacom one)

but i still prefer using my ipad which is not related to huion kamvas 13 per se….. i still havent managed to calibrate the colour profile on it one to one with my mac. afaik its a common problem with drawing displays which people just adapt to by editing their illustrations afterwards or checking the colours during the process. i almost set it to be the same with my computer, but in the end the drawing tablet shows brighter colours and even little differences annoy me…. also its top screen layer adds a somewhat grainy texture to everything so it creates an illusion that youre drawing with a texture brush while on computer it comes out both less bright and without texture. im very nitpicky when it comes to both those things so i couldnt adapt to drawing on a drawing display

and its big, it requires a lot of space and movement which is bad for the wrist and elbow. when i want to draw on pc i use it in a graphic tablet mode and shrink the working area size. ive decided just to get a small graphic tablet later because drawing on a small area while looking at my computer display is much better for my back and wrist/elbow health + i see colours abd texture as they are. thats also why ive been using an ipad instead

overall: its a good tablet, great even for its price and according to reviews on par with more expensive wacoms but for me, personally, it wasnt a good choice. or i still haven’t managed to adapt to it. i also hear that xp-pens are good, many artists i follow use xp-pen tablets

i already have bad joints due to a disability but i understand what you mean by that!! ive actually been wanting to draw with my arm instead of my wrist so i was hoping a drawing tablet would help with that and maybe strengthen my joints and muscles

i also draw on an ipad right now but since ive been wanting a drawing tablet for yeeears especially with a screen ive done a bit of research and the huion kamvas pro 16 2.5k is very much tickling my brain

i'll keep your review in mind though!! im not sure if the difference between the versions is big or not

a big plus is that i can use it as a second monitor and when i get a switch that isnt lite i can also connect that which is awesome

so im grateful to have something that isnt going to just be used when im drawing

are you going to buy it online or in store? because you should def check if its big enough to allow you to draw with your arm. if its 16 inches i think it may be alright but it depends on your arm length ahdjskd for me 13 inches is too small to draw with my arm 🤕🤕🤕 thats also why im having troubles with it, and my right wrist is already kind of not in a good shape……
i understand the part about wanting to get a drawing tablet!! id felt like that for years before getting one, it was my childhood dream actually agxjsjxan yeah….

i actually ordered it last night haha i just went for it after looking up youtube reviews and i liked it a lot from the looks of it!! my dad said just go for it since its my first one and i can always save up for another in the future ^^ even if im not able to draw using my arm i think ill enjoy it a lot

thankfully im used to drawing on ipad and im at my desk most of the time so i already have bad posture and ouchy joints so it wont be a new thing for me

thats how it was for me too 😭 an apartment i lived in three years ago had a big table where i could rest my elbow while drawing + i bought a vertical mouse and my shoulder and arm pains disappeared. but then i moved into another apartment where there was a wall right at my right side so i had no way to move my arm freely… and there wasnt any place to move the table to because the apartment was very small. and yeah, i started to have shoulder and arm pains 🤕 now i moved again and looking for a new apartment, hopefully ill be able to fix this issue 🙏
