I'm trying to find an army my kid will be able to play with and don't want to accidentally gimp him this edition as I'd like him to enjoy the hobby.

What are the best n00b friendly armies and does anyone have the tier list jpg that I saw going round recently please?

I would say go with whatever army your kid likes and thinks is cool, unless your are playing at some of the highest levels tier lists and relative army strength is usually hand wave able. There are one or two armies that are usually harder to start playing with (I don’t know AoS as well so I don’t know which armies those are, usually armies with styles of play are drastically different) but the very best way for someone to enjoy the hobby is letting them do rule of cool

At the end of 3e balance was very good. While 4e isn't there yet, early stats are much better than the new edition of 40k was at this point, and balance will only get better with time.

#

So to echo the message above, have him go with what he thinks looks coolest.

#

Some armies are a bit trickier to use, but with enough games in any army can be usable. Just don't commit to Beasts of Chaos or Bonesplitterz because they are being retired in less than a year

He wants to play sylvaneth but I've been advised he's gonna get rofl stomped

rocky badger
#

Sylvaneth are in a bit of a bad spot right now, the main thing is that a lot of their army relies on the faction terrain, and if you mess up your faction terrain placement you could really work against yourself

Thats the sort of thing I wanted to avoid. Hes 7 so he's not going to understand that sort of tactical side just yet. He says he wants an army with good shooting, good magic and healing. Any other races like that?

sly wren
#

The main source of healing for most armies is Rally, and everybody has access to that

#

Good shooting and magic could be Cities of Sigmar

#

Tzeentch could also fit. Their shooting isn't amazing, but they've got the magic.
Lumineth have an entire sub faction dedicated to shooting, and they have a lot of wizards.

#

Same as Seraphon. Plus they have dinosaurs

But also, rules change, they are never going to stay the same, get into certain armies for rules, and you can get sorely butt hurt when they change their rules around, it’s why people always recommend rule of cool

Lumineth seems like a good army, thanks

How does he feel about playing as the bad guys? Slaves to Darkness are a fairly straightforward army to play once you have a list. Thoigh their rules do take 15~ mins to fully understand the utility of.

He doesn't like the chaos factions but he likes the goblins thematically. I don't know if they're any good though

sly wren
#

Goblins are in a weird spot. The trolls are very good currently, but most of the other units in that faction could do with some adjustments (which I'm sure will come)

worldly inlet
#

Are they fun though? Shit like doomdivers and fanatics made them damn good fun in warhammer fantasy, are they still a giggle to play?

sly wren
#

I think they're a lot of fun

Reading their roster they have excellent squig shenanigans

Goblins are pretty much Trogg spam rn, but they are really fun to play

If he is 7, I highly suggest Gargants.

The size of the Gargants make it so you can paint it with him as the details are big enough for him to get a good feel for painting. It should be easy for you to have him base coat a lot of the armor pieces with whatever colors he wants, then you go in and wash them and highlight them to finish them. They also are big enough that he wont easily break them handling them, and they can get knocked over without needing heavy repairs, just clip off the extra bits.

They can also be displayed in his room easily when not in use, which he will enjoy.

Gameplay wise, Gargants are a simple army, he gets only a few big models, but each one gets to stomp up and down, they get to roar or do wrestling moves against other monsters, they have a bunch of narrative attacks like swinging their clubs, stomping their feet, grabbing guys and crushing or throwing them, and are very forgiving since they are designed to fight multiple units at once. I can easily imagine him getting into the fantasy of big stompy giants fefifo'ing all over the smaller armies.

And balance wise Gargants are usually middle of the pack, they are never terrible, never too overpowered and because they have hard counters naturally, you can always tune your list by bringing things that can threaten them, or go light on them and let him have fun just stepping on things.

They also are very good in doubles, where you can alway team up with him in a game, bring 1000 points to score objectives, give him 2 Mega Gargants and let him go on a rampage and its always going to be an enjoyable game for him.

#

Plus their stories in their army books make for great bed time stuff, since as a faction Gargants are overall a very goofy design, its really easy to make a story out of every match.

Cities of sigmar spearhead is also a very versatile spearhead, comes with cavalry, infantry, a cannon and a knight on horseback!

#

I view it as a Swiss Army knife of spearheads with what you can do

Yes, big stompy boys

worldly inlet

The spearhead is just one dude 😂

devout turret
#

Their spear head is three of the little ones, all able to be modeled differently.

worldly inlet
#

Ah i misread it then. Its 2 dudes and a general

#

Cheers i will run it by him. It does seem like he will stick with sylvaneth as he's loving clubbing the shit out of my saurus with his treelord

devout turret

Oh yeah, sylvaneth are great as well
