Where can I find model stats? The iphone app requires a newer version of iphone than I have. Am I just boned?
-
Is there a good resource that compares faction costs? I'm not finding anything that wasn't 30% inflation ago.
-
I don't love rock, paper, scissor matchups. What mechanics or factions should I be avoiding? Like I don't want to buy a faction that gets demolished by gunlines or a fire faction when a fire immune faction exists.
-
I also love reliability. I don't want my plan to not work because I rolled a 1 or whatever. How reliable is spellcasting? Any factions you recommend avoiding?
-
Do faster armies just have more agency over the outcome of a game? I'm tempted to get the slowest army because I hate missing charges by 1 mm, but I feel like faster armies have more options they can make and thus more opportunities to pilot the game in their favor.
#Noob questions.

You can look at the PDF for the faction of your choice here: https://www.warhammer-community.com/warhammer-age-of-sigmar-downloads/

No, not really, points change all the time, so there isn't a "faction cost". Some will always be more costly than other, by design because they are hordy, but that's about it.
-
Other than Sons of Behemath, you should be good to go.

There's is very little way to increase reliability in AoS, very few to no rerolls. Spell casting is somewhat reliable, less so in 4ed since most cast difficulty got increased. Still, it's prevalent in current meta, you won't be avoiding it. If you seek reliability, look at faction that are somewhat elite with already "good" probability on their side.

They have more way on how to score points, still, slow army do exist, and do work
to add to faster armies, being able to get to objectives faster or move for battle tactics is critical but you don't need to go all out with fast or slow units as idealy you'd run a mix. For example, you can have cavalry seize objectives, hold enemies down and do BTs while your slower forces move up the board.
I'm looking through these faction pdfs, and I don't see the point costs anywhere. Where do I find that?
they're in the battle profiles pdf
the ogre sculpts are pretty ancient. Is there any danger of them getting eliminated? I heard beasts of chaos are going away
Also, both nighthaunt and ogors sound appealing to me, but it sounds like nighthaunt is overperforming in aos, and ogres sound strong in spearhead. Is there any chance gw will bring them in line soon since it's a new edition or is it like yearly balance patches?
can spearhead even be patched? Things don't have point costs
Yes, they can just add/remove/tweak special abilities, reinforcements on units, change which rounds units can enter from etc
If you’re playing online, via TTS, there is a community workshop game board called something like DKHM warhammer AoS 4.0 , it is a game bird for 4th edition made by a Portuguese content creator and has all of the different stat block and relevant rule cards for every army in that save file
There’s also a pdf file availible on warhammer community for every army but someone has already shown you that
For points 3 and 4, my general advice is this - warhammer AoS is a bloody game, units die a lot and often. Every faction has things that can punish the opponents army. Make sure you’re not equating reliable / consistent to durable. Those are very different things. I personally love soulblight gravelords because with them even if the enemy is able to delete some units early, you have options to being them back at a later point behind enemy lines, so your models end often end up seeing play regardless
I looked at gravelords yesterday. I like their rules
As for reliable casting, it seems that in this edition the emphasis is more on flexibility of magic rather than reliability. It seems like you get more chances to cast your spells with there now being a possibility to cast in the enemy hero phase, and total access to your lord for all wizards. However if you are interested in reliability I suggest looking into priest focused factions more because with them you can accumulate ritual points even if you fail to cast the spell
If you decide to go with them I’d be happy to show you the ropes
Alternatively for reliable magic, lumineth and Nighthaunt seem to be ok options too. That being said it’s a general rule that you shouldn’t be relying on things that aren’t guaranteed to win your games. If you build a strategy around a certain spell working and it doesn’t, you have no one to blame but yourself. Skaven also might have good magic
I liked nighthaunt’s rules but they sound op right now
they can be beat
im taking part in a Path to glory campaign right now playing soulblight and i mopped the floor with a reasonably good nighthaunt list
granted that was at 1000p
Nighthaunt are one of the strongest factions rn iirc (Sbgl aswell.)
i didnt say that they werent, i just said they can be beat
also they're very likely to get tuned down by the time you build and paint an army
not to mention the data is from a competitive environment so you're probably not going to run the lists that made them have such a high WR
This is what I was wondering about. How often can GW be expected to tune stuff like this?
I'm new to aos but in 40k gw does the equivalent of a balance patch every 3 months
so I'd say reasonably often
ny winter there will be some changes
every 3 months
Is there a good introduction to aos strategy anywhere?
Where are the rules for the spells? The rules say I should look in the army composition module but I don’t see that. I found the endless ones
they'll be in your faction pack
Is torgillius any good? I really want 1 cannon, and he’s the closest thing I can find in gravelords
Hmm, I thought there’d be like generic spell schools I could choose like in warhammer fantasy
Also, I thought there were faction specific battle tactics. Where are those? I can only find the generic ones.
iirc those used to be a thing but as of 4th edition they're not (at least at the moment)
there are currently generic and grand alliance battle tactics
where would I find the grand alliance ones?
hes pretty interesting, ngl. he could fit quite snuggly into some deathmarch lsits that are heavy on grave guard
Is it a bad time to get into gravelords?
not at all
theyre as good as ever, but the armies have rotated since last edition
now skeeltons seem to reign
with zombies taking the second place
Tournament lists have a lot of grave guard, black knights, torgiilus, mannfred but none of those models seem available new
im thinking something like Mannfred, + torgillius + Wight king / necromancer, + 10 black knights, +3x20 grave guard
this is 1950 points meaning you get extra command point
could drop one block of grave guard for 3 blocks of 10 skellies, or 1 of 10 and 1 of 20
or could drop one brick of grave guard and get a block of 10 more black knights
could work to
black knihgts are cracked rn
crazy effective
they punch above their weiht class and survive above their weight class. deathly invocation gives them staying pwoer while even having removed them fully he enemy can still see them be brough back at half trength
But the only way to acquire them is used armies right?
wdym
i have no idea as to the state of markets for warhammer minis right now
could be that people bought up the black knights, idk
They weren’t available on the two online mini stores I looked at
mannfred could be obtained from the second edition skeleton horde box, along with 10 skeletons and 5 black knights
that box has amazing value right now
be aware though that it is possible to try the various armies by palying online first via virtual table top
I found the black knights and 9 other models. They’re apparently only available directly from GW
hopping into this thread to ask: I'm looking through armies and want to start buying but can't find a faction, at least from my searching, that fits quite what i'm looking for. I want a 'tanky' frontline with a backline of shooters. Stormcast seems to fit the bill as well as the ogar mawtribes. is this astute? Artillery would be nice, dont care for cavalry
Cities of Sigmar currently fit that description
Oh thank! was checking them out too. more so than the other two factions i imagine? and is that kind of play style viable?
Viable depend on the level of play you're aiming at, but it is potent.
Human and Aelf do the shooting and the magical support
Duardin are the frontline, with option for both a really tanky and somewhat tanky but damage dealer units.
They also have access to an artillery piece.
in terms of level of play i was thinking non serious tournaments, i dont want to be a seal to be clubbed. I guess i will go buy a spearhead now
Then they'll work fine
The issue with the faciton is that the Duardin and Aelf side are old, people are cautious about them getting either resculpt or completly removed. I personnally think they wont get removed, but a resculpt at some point is probable.
In any case, the box are human centric, which are brand new, and fusilier, the main Human gunline, is a good unit.
