#beta branch updates for a day

Having a beta branch does genuinely sound neat
It won't really allow players to play the new update any faster as servers will still be running the main branch but server owners can preemptively fix bugs and broken stuff so when the update actually comes out it should be as simple as a server restart unlike what we had today where we had to wait a couple hours for servers to come back up and get fixed it would also give the classic devs a heads up if there are any game breaking bugs like server crash bugs so they can delay the update and fix that
There's already a closed beta for this sort of thing which includes a lot of the verified server hosts. Thing is often it takes until some weird situation or hardware difference outside of playtest to notice something going wrong, we even had that after testing the original steam release build for ages.
And then there's stuff like today's mistake where it was literally just an accident on which build to push at the last minute, the beta had already been tested
I wouldn't be against getting more players and hosters into beta though
I wonder how did no one notice the underscore chat bug
I didn't cause I'm on Linux, can't tell you bout anyone else :p
Tho that's another thing with playtests right, the very fact it's an organised thing can lead to some missed areas
If you make a discord and talk through that you're less likely to use the game chat, so you can miss bugs.
Reminds me of the old 2.2 server crash with alt+f4 as medic after ubering or something, nobody was rage quitting the playtest so it didn't get caught lol
I mean there must've been at least one person that wrote an under score in a chat message and saw it missing
Yeah I mean I think it was quite a late occurring bug because the fonts were getting changed along with the UI
Funny though
I do wonder when's that actually getting fixed, as for now the github issue was marked as low priority
I guess I'll have to wait until 3.2.0 /jk
also disugising as engineer
Wasn't this a bug introduced post launch?
it was there launch day
i cant believe it wasnt patched in the recent update ngl lol
Reset your keybinds
We already patched this bug but its sadly caused by some default settings at launch
Its one of those "we know but there's always something we need to knock out before it" situations
Wait is there a server crash going around right now?
No it was just an example sorry for the mild panic
Thank fuck

It was an example of something that could happen and if the update was just a beta branch for a day you could delay it cuz otherwise you'd have to take back an update which I'm assuming is a lot harder
Or rapidly patch it which also sounds like a pain in the ass lol
Oh yeah, that's why we already do it.
A rapid patch isnt actually difficult but it is disruptive.
Wait you already do the beta branch thing?
We have a beta with dozens of players and most active server hosts. They get patches days in advance
Huh didn't realize
Is it private or public
Well actually there is one crash bug now that I think about it but it wouldn't come up often
Basically if you use the mvm upgrade terminal and one of your weapon slots doesn't have a weapon in it then it immediately crashes
The strange part is the upgrade screen comes up correctly just before you crash
Happened to me on qnzs server during the update fiasco medic didn't have any primary weapon for a while not even the default syringe gun and well yeah
Though it wasn't a server crash It was just a game crash
Again sorry for the mild panic attack
