Random collection of poor performances
Kindly asking for some very concrete advice, with some explicit things to do in certain situations (Its okay, I know there are no universal answers, not asking for that, but I feel so clueless I need something to hold onto in free fall)

gotta preface this with a disclaimer: I don't know marisa too well.
Marisa is a bulldog of a character who specializes in attacking the opponents drive gauge, vs Gerr84 starting the round passively was great!

But the strength of Marisa lies in her amazing special moves that need specific answers and awareness to keep in check, like light phalanx or charged gladius that deal insane drive chip on block and force the opponent to make a defence decision: respect the pressure and get burnt out or start parrying to protect their gauge and leave themselves open to throw mixups.

Try loading into games, win or lose, practice landing spaced slightly charged gladiuses. This poke is great because it does its chip damage on block, pushes them closer to the corner on hit and even gives you the option to leave a spacing trap for the opponent to fall into with st.mp afterwards.

You'll probably lose a few rounds before you really start to intuit where the move is best used

#

Its also super important to stop poking intermittently and go back to playing the footsies shuffle while watching for a jump, since their low hitboxes don't interact with jump attacks well, phalanx and gladius prompt jumps from people

#

since gladius loses to lows and phalanx crushes lows try showing them charged gladiuses and watch if they adapt with lows in neutral as a reponse. thats the time to jump over that wussy c.mk and duff them in the face with plus frames

#

VS Kabten be sure to crouch block every few seconds while playing the neutral shuffle dance and hold it to make sure the manon doesn't open you up and get on top of you with their spinning ground slide. It nets you a PHAT punish on block since that thing is unsafe as heck. Blocking the weird ballet overhead isn't something I know how to deal with, I'd ask one of the Manon experts in coaching about that thing, usually moves that seem kinda broken have something about that makes it easy to deal with (if you have the knowledge.)

One thing to practice for sure in this matchup is your meaty setups, this manon was stubborn with their wakeup drive impacts. So go into training mode, set the bot to reversal jab, neutral jump and drive impact. then practice landing charged phalanx into whatever drive rush button reaches to find something that is safe to check those 3 wakeup options with.

also thanks a lot for the review

being ready for random jump ins is super important for marisa, every now and again you'll need to stop whatever you think you need to do and focus on a potential jump in, remind yourself what anti air would work if they jumped at you right that second every now and again otherwise people will abuse jump ins in neutral because you're attention isn't on the air a enough

#

Theres a magic sweet spot you'll find between splitting your focus on the air and the ground, it comes with lots of mindful practice and time

right sorry I reread the sentence

#

first time I read it as "you should stop intermittently poking"

#

but you said "you should intermittently stop poking"

#

you wanna tell me that I should sometimes wait and see

warm current
#

right! you don't need to always be making a decision, the back and forth dance we do isn't that attention grabbing, sometimes you just gotta stop your gameplan and go "BRUH wtf are they doing rn again?"

#

It's unbelievably easy to lose track of that info, taking the time to check and watch them passively to see where their head is at will help you make guesses as to what "mode" they're in

mystic coral
#

only say it if you mean, but was I doing well against that Manon?

warm current
#

yeah your decisions were decent against the Manon, she called you out with the slide a few times, thats how she set up her win condition (the ballet overhead and command grab) on you so fast. If you had the experience you would have seen that full screen slide coming a mile away, been ready to pre-emptively block it when she saw you moving around, and landed a big reward!

#

labbing out how you want to cash out after that sweep will really help you in terms of controlling the craziness they throw your way

mystic coral
#

seeing Manon go crazy like that sure does make one wanna play her

#

but I gotta stay loyal

warm current
#

yeah they're having a grand ol time

#

I have no clue how to optimize her damage, I'd go look at a BnB video or ask one of the marisa playing coaches whats best for her in that situation

mystic coral
#

yeah will do, though I do know a ton of her combos

#

...just cant do 'em Help

Yeah plum covered a lot of things. I do think the rashid player is better than silver. Considering he’s ranking it up I’m guessing he’s a higher level player (gold-plat) coming to a new character, since his play was really solid for the level.

#

And honestly you were getting a little gimmicked by the Manon. A lot of the things he did are things that are potentially extremely unsafe (for example b. Mk> b.mk, qcb lk), but they’re all high, low, throw mixups. You’ll realize as you climb but plat onwards tends to be where you start to understand character gimmicks and game plans and if you can punish gimmicks well enough, you tend to climb into diamond.

#

Honestly I liked how you played neutral and your punish combo on Manon seemed decently strong. I think your biggest issue right now is you aren’t comfortable putting pressure on shield. Marisa is extremely oppressive on block and you can almost run people over with Superman punch and the phalanx. You don’t even need meaties (at a certain point people just start back rolling your meaties 😭). Fwiw Superman punch is a great meaty too lol

#

Be comfortable just poking at people’s guard when you get the upper hand and slowly whittling away at them. I’d watch games from Big Bird at Red Bull Kumite to see how he does this; he’s one of the best at just slowly pressuring you into giving him a combo which he cashes out on for crazy amounts of damage

#

Sajam has done an analysis on big birds play specifically so that might a great video if you want a higher level player who can try to breakdown some of the finer details since a lot of the decisions being made sometimes go unnoticed
