SF6 is my first fighting game ever. I need some advice on my game plan and any coaching would help.

Below are the replays to some games I lost yesterday & I play the character Ken.

I made it back, won't be in VC but I'll watch the replays on my own and leave my comments here

#

I don't actually actively play Ken so I have no doubt IngeniusSoul will have more to say either way

#

The first one kinda feels like character unfamiliarity. Cammy is very good at getting through and punishing fireballs as you no doubt noticed. She's also really good at offense once she's in. Which I dare say you also noticed given that she took both rounds off of essentially one good "get in".

#

Blocking on wakeup is important against her, using Drive Reversal is too. Something you could have done to get her off you once she was in was EX Shoryuken (better known as EX DP). EX DP is fully invincible. Which means you'd have gone through anything she tried to hit you with and countered her.

#

Of course it's also very risky. If they block you can basically say goodnight.

#

But it's better than having to guess over and over.

#

Especially since this Cammy was not scared of your EX DP. She just kept going and going and going.

#

I'll focus mostly on overal things rather than Ken-specific stuff

#

I can say though that after you hit DI, you should use your medium autocombo and end it with a forward special (DP). Just doing DP after is not enough damage. You really wanna capitalise on an opening like this. When you had level 3 ready in the second match you used heavy auto combo which was a good choice. Did a TON of damage.

drowsy hedge
#

You wanna be more mindful of when you throw fireballs, against Luke as well you're throwing them very close and giving him an opportunity to jump in at you

#

Try using crouching medium into fireball when they're that close

#

That way you stop them from jumping and establish some space control

shrewd lake
#

True I watch Orarin1 mainly on twitch and he does throw some from a distance so I picked it up from him but I do got to start doing normal attacks such as punches and kicks because of the frames

drowsy hedge
#

Yeah I see you get punished quite a lot for raw fireball up close

#

Could have closed out round one if you had the medium autocombo after DI SataniaCry

#

Unfortunate

shrewd lake
#

Yeah learning those auto combos have been game changing for me tbh

drowsy hedge
#

Ah you got hit with the throw loop here in roudn 2

shrewd lake
#

In the first week I was doing the super arts with just circle and triangle and getting blocked by CPU

drowsy hedge
#

That's really hard to deal with

shrewd lake
#

I was calling this dude a spammer

drowsy hedge
#

Unfortunately throw loops are here to stay

#

They counter parry on wakeup

#

But they also win against mashing

shrewd lake
#

Ah so can I do DP on wake up?

drowsy hedge
#

The only way to get out is jumping, teching the throw, backdashing or EX DP

#

All of which carry their own risks

#

Very strong strat, that

#

I'm watching the Juri match now and you open with a suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper dangerous fireball

#

That's a really bad habit

shrewd lake
#

So I have been practising throw escapes last night after realising I am getting countered a lot when I go for a throw and the timing can feel off

shrewd lake
drowsy hedge
#

Don't get me wrong, using fireball is fine

#

But you use it in very dangerous situations, when the opponent is too close for comfort

#

When you're full screen, fireballs are a very effective tool

#

But a round start fireball? That's risky

shrewd lake
#

I hate when I play deejay and they spam the fireball

drowsy hedge
#

Deejay's heavy fireball is a menace

#

I have a projectile invulnerable move and couldn't deal with it in a set yesterday, need to lab that

#

Very good movement in this match, a little bit aimless but active which is good

shrewd lake
#

I have to be better at the anti airs, especially against people who jump a lot

drowsy hedge
#

Definitely yeah

#

Anti-airing is a huge part of SF

#

If you can't anti-air you're allowing your opponent chances to hit their optimal combos with jump-ins

shrewd lake
#

Definitely

drowsy hedge
#

I'm actually seeing a massive improvement in this match

#

I'm not sure if you did it consciously or not, but you stayed in perfect anti-air range

shrewd lake
#

Someone complained in the battle hub after our match because I used drive impacts a lot

drowsy hedge
#

Not always but often

shrewd lake
#

They said I would struggle in the future against better players

drowsy hedge
#

Maybe

#

But I don't see you spamming it at every opportunity

#

Just avoid using it as an anti-air, very easy to throw you out fo it

shrewd lake
#

Yeah as you saw I used it a bit too much in that first game and missed my opponent multiple times

drowsy hedge
#

I'm seeing it yeah

#

Consistently impressed with your spacing

#

You seem to have an instinct for where to position yourself

#

Just unfortunate that it doesn't translate into anti-airs most of the time suuure

shrewd lake
#

Been watching a lot of orarin1 who is rank 6 in the world on twitch and he plays Ken

drowsy hedge
#

Oh that loss actually broke my fucking heart

#

I'm shattered

shrewd lake
#

He uses the drive rush (R1 + >>) like all masters do

drowsy hedge
#

You were doing so well

shrewd lake
#

I really hate playing Marisa players because they just take most my damage and don’t give me a chance to attack most of the time

drowsy hedge
#

Let me watch this one

#

Marisa's definitely a matchup check

#

Immense damage, very very punishing if you don't know her openings

#

You weren't doing half bad in the second half of the first round but the lifelead she'd built was too much

#

Marisa is very weak to low attacks

#

Her Scutum stance has no armor below the waist, and neither does Gladius, the big straight punch

#

EX Scutum does have full body armor

#

Aaaand the whiffpunish level 3

#

She was waiting for it

#

Looking for a fireball I'd wager, but any whiff was good

shrewd lake
#

Gotta work on those medium crouch kicks then

#

With that drive rush (R1 + >>) when is the best time to use it?

#

I see masters use it all the time

drowsy hedge
#

Well, that's a very versatile move

shrewd lake
#

I mainly do DI when I use that move as I do not know much combos atm other than the ones from quick dash (fire tatsu etc;)

shrewd lake

Thank you for your help @drowsy hedge
