Short background: I'm a long time Dota 2 player who has also played a fair amount of competitive shooters (CS:GO, Valorant), that is getting burned out on those genres and would like to transition to Fighting Games. 2023 seemed like the perfect year due to a new SF, MK, and Tekken. I had coaching in the past with Dota and CS:GO and it was invaluable for my learning career. I'd be very interested in linking up with a seasoned player who is interested in a student that they can coach through the trenches, as one on one coaching is what has resonated well with me in the past.

I have no problem grinding/practicing a lot, as I did this in the past to hit top 10% MMR in Dota 2 and even competed in open qualifiers for various tournaments. I'm open to any coaching techniques but have always responded well to having a bit of a gameplan to practice/follow. My main reason for looking for a coach is that I've seen others and myself follow bad advice in the past when learning a new competitive game and would like to avoid that here. If anyone is interested, I think I would be a great student due to my background in learning other complex games. Thanks!

We got no shortage of coaches and people happy to help, and all our coaching is essentially one on one. Just ask for help with whatever ya need!

If you don't have any idea what you need help with, then I suggest posting replays for critique, that way we can deduce ourselves what ya needa work on.

#

Also no need to pay. Only reason would be you're really lookin for people to go out of their way, such as you wanting help on a strict schedule or wanting someone to write you a detailed personal training regimine or something

I think a detailed personal training regimine might be what I'm looking for tbh. It has worked for me in the past with other games.

aight, well as far as any paid coaching goes, that's not explicitly something that "New Challenger" does, that'd just be a some of the people here are willing to do it situation, so you'd have to ask coaches individually about what you want and discuss with them if they offer paid coaching.

I'd suggest simply asking about what you need help with in the mean time though. We're all volunteers, and what you want may end up being something someone is happy to help with for free.

#

If nothing else, might help you find the coach you vibe with more and want to ask for more in depth paid coaching from

Fair enough. Right now I'm just looking for some generally guidance on where to start, what to practice, and so on. I don't think I have enough experience yet to really have my replays reviewed or anything like that.

Are you like, brand brand new or have you gotten into things a little already?

#

Also any idea on who you wanna main or undecided on that?

okay, so big question then is would you rather learn things in a way that's more short-term oriented (more clear results, more fun overall, more winning), or a way that's more long-term oriented (better foundation, lose a lot early on, tough to see improvement)

I was in a shit rank for a year in Dota while I practiced mechanics before I made it to the top rankings.

okay, good to hear

#

well then for now pick a single character to work on. Can swap mains later when ya got a better idea what you want if need be

snow nebula
#

Yeah it's between Ryu and Ken I think, maybe leaning towards Ryu because Ken seems much more aggressive and I'm not sure I'm there yet.

vocal venture
#

fair enough. Ken is indeed the more aggressive of the two

I watched some overviews of the characters and playstyles, and something like a zoner doesn't seem like a good fit right now because I want to learn the more straightforward mechanics that are universal to everyone.

so the first things I'd recommend starting with are:

  • main anti air
  • main poke
  • poke > dr bnb (and blockstring variant if needed)
  • meaty bnb (and blockstring variant if needed)
  • 1~2 strengths of your character (so in this case, fireball and install for Ryu would be my recommendations)
snow nebula
#

Can you give me a brief explanation of blockstring variant?

vocal venture
#

idk how comfortable you are with learning stuff though, might want to divide and tackle those in pieces over trynna learn all at once

#

you know what a blockstring is yet or nah?

snow nebula
#

nope

pretty simple: a string of attacks you do if your opponent blocks

#

as opposed to how the combo is a string of attacks you do if you hit the opponent

snow nebula
#

is the goal of that to end with something that is safe on block if they are blocking when you start?
