I take advanced art class and our main method of learning is through looking at references or a live model

Yeah, your work looks incredible! I do need my good pencils which are at home, it's not easy to draw dark tones using a 6B haha

Just make sure the pencil is sharpened and hold the pencil towards the front and you should be fine

Since some brands produce pencils with richer dark pencils
