That's what I'm trying to prove with what I'm doing, 1k wins with sonic pixel arts/just related to sonic, when it's not the theme, I got two firsts, 1 third, 1 fifth, like 4-5 sixths and 1 seventh

Looks good! U could improve on the texturing and maybe add a little beach around the volcano to make it look more like an island and the floor less random. Some green in bushes would be good aswell. Im personally not a big fan of using water as the floor and would recommend using dark blue glass for the water. Then u can also add in some waves with different blue glass blocks and some white:)

stray away from using straight lava if you want details, try red concrete and some orange, yellow, and red glass.

His style is not my cup of tea. I focus on the theme heavily, I stopped relying on terrain a while ago unless it was a theme that called for it, and his is all about filling 80% of the space so you can spend the last minute putting in something related to the theme.

Making good terrain is easy if you want to do something unique, all it really is is knowing how to use unique blocks and blend them in properly with mixtures of other things people wouldn't tend to use. Maybe some shaping changes too.
I definitely think you could easily make your own cool style outside of it.

When making organics I’d try to focus on the shaping, maybe try to expand the stomach a bit more because the legs are sort of over scaling it (making it look smaller) I also think it’s the same thing w the feet, just making them look a tad more skinny would do wonders. This was one of my buddies foxes for example
