That's why you should always join a new match the moment you finished your run.
Obviously it won't prevent it from happening guaranteed, but it will minimize your chances of encountering it.

There isn’t really a set amount of checkpoints you need to hit for lvl 40. Because as the person above you said the amount of xp varies with the length of the map. Also said in here
