Consistently starting combos, not sure why I have good kb reducing mid strafing however I can't pick up that well

IMO. Starting a combo usually requires you to jump instantly as soon as you touch the ground after the first trade hit. Make sure to aim at feet in order to start a combo. And always have a lower ground. Jumping too early or being on the high ground when fighting will cause you to get combo.
