i swear there was a suggestion about this, but its not been implemented
its just hardcoded to give you negative exp unless you hug a baby duck

You never kill a duck
You hug every duck
You never get negative xp bc you never killed a duck
So you just spam hug, either you get positive xp on any duck, or you hug a tree and it does nothing
it's not fair

I disagree with the suggestion. You were never supposed to hug normal ducks in the first place so you should be punished for doing that
