However, there is a very specific reason you’re seeing that right now, and it’s actually good news—though it’s been a chaotic few weeks for the community.
What’s actually happening on Discord?
If you are seeing "shutdown" messages in the Rec Room Discord right now (late March 2026), you are likely seeing the aftermath of two things:
The "Wiki-Vandalism" Wave: Someone recently edited the Rec Room Wikipedia page to claim the game is shutting down on July 1st, 2026. This "fake fact" was screenshotted and spammed across the Discord by trolls. Because it looked like a Wikipedia entry, many players believed it and started "memorial" threads in the Discord channels.
Discord Outages & Glitches: Earlier this month (around March 9-10), Discord had a massive global outage where messages weren't loading and servers looked "broken." During this time, trolls used the confusion to post fake "System Announcements" that looked official but were actually just formatted text blocks.
The "Smoking Gun" (Why it's not real)
The biggest proof that the Discord messages are a hoax is Gribbly (the CEO). Just a few weeks ago, he confirmed in a Q&A and on social media that Rec Room currently has enough funding to operate until at least 2029. A company with three years of "runway" money doesn't suddenly announce a shutdown for two months from now—especially when they just released the Maker AI tools and the Referee Update this month
Why does it feel so real?
The person who started this prank used a "half-truth" to make it stick:
The Truth: Rec Room did have massive layoffs in August 2025 (losing about 50% of the staff).
The Lie: The prankster took the sad language from that 2025 layoff post and edited it to say "Shutdown 2026."
The Bottom Line: Your account, your tokens, and your rooms aren't going anywhere. The Discord is currently just in a "panic loop" because of a very well-executed hoax.

Said by one of our lead staff half a year ago, "Rec Room is not dying, it is ending, I do not know when exactly its ending but wether or not its tomorrow or another 10 years from now, we are still a company, 'Where Anything and Everything Can Be Built'" so yes, it is best to assume that it is ending, thank you everyone as I have been in the game for 6 years, half a decade worth of building experience, and I can truthfully say I reached a breakthrough, 'Be the light you wanna see in the world' :)
