they are more like a cosmetic medal. old pen skins feel more pridefull since you had to get 1st to earn it. (there was only top 3 as well)

I would say the complete opposite tbh. Everyone puts a false sense of value onto items that you can buy. All because before anyone could buy tokens, wearing items like the Astronaut set or a Space visor Actually meant something. The only items that show value now are earned items. Like Quest items, Game items or Contest items.
As for the "not going well with anything". I think this one is an exception, You do have to be creative though, i will admit:
