Technology is moving forward and they can't let old hardware hold them back.
There is no money to be had in keeping old hardware active. The money is in people buying new hardware and wanting to use new technology.

There’s no new tech in quest 2 , it’s just cheaper materials, an lcd display instead of oled and the new hardware only drives the higher resolution. It’s not running rec room ‘better’ in any way. They messed up and hop in a trend set by meta that’s not benefiting anyone except big tech.

Quest 1 was on Snapdragon 835, Quest 2 is on Snapdragon XR2, has more RAM and more storage. So, yes, there was new tech. It wasn't like a whole leap in technological advancements, but it is enough difference that somethings can't be run on the Quest 1 like they can the Quest 2.
