I know how to make the basics, but would there be a way to detect what object a player is standing on, then depending on what it is it plays a different sound.

For example, if I was walking on metal it would make a little clank sound, but if I walked over to grass it would make a new sound.

Any help?

You could have the different materials be their own object and give each material a tag to represent which sound to play
