Hangouts are hard to keep people around unless you are having social events or the place is just amazing looking. I know some hangouts have games in them, like chess or checkers. So long as it is a game that doesn't have any real mechanics, it won't cross the line of #activity or #game according to contest rules. But, if not for a contest, that doesn't usually matter. To keep people in the game, something rewarding has to happen. Like numbers that get people on a leaderboard. That is why PvP and Clickers manage to keep people hooked. They can be #1 at whatever it is.
