Is playing a video game the same as an act of worship? Does playing the game Hades change your belief in Allah being One? If you read a book about someone doing shirk, does that make you also complicit in the act of shirk?

I think it's important to understand a few principles:

1. All matters of the dunya are permissible until proven impermissible (This is an Usool principle found in most schools of Fiqh)
2. All actions are by intention (Hadith 1 from 40 Hadith Nawawi)

There's an element of individual accountability here when it comes to playing games. If you're a susceptible individual, and playing a game where you do evil actions inclines you towards doing them in real life, then you really shouldn't be playing video games and should seek professional mental help.

However, if you're like most people who consume games as a form of entertainment, then you should understand that you can ignore the story and play just to play. No one is forcing you to acknowledge the lore as truth as it pertains to your real life.
