If its 1-1 with the other gender in VC the issue is feeling do develop whether you want them to or not and the line between friends is very vague. if its in the context of playing with a group of people, typically you are more accountable and don't engage as much and there is more "witnesses" so things won't spiral as fast. Its not haram to interact with the other gender so long as the correct detterents are in place.

Sorry for not specifying earlier. I usually aim for group gaming calls, and in situations where it's a one-on-one voice call, someone may be present in my room overhearing the conversation. Despite that, some people still claim that it's haram, and I find it difficult to understand or reason with their perspective, but I do respect it. I do agree being one-on-one can lead to haram and there are hadiths as evidence.

I'm curious in knowing what the ruling is if the other person is a potential spouse (actively talking for marriage purposes). Could you replace phone calls with 1-1 game sessions?

In regards to the original question, is the other person aware that there could be someone nearby overhearing the conversation from your end?
