Assalamu alaikum. My brother asks, is it allowed to buy a standoff 2 case for real money on a third-party site (about $2) if you're guaranteed to get an item that pays for this amount?
I told him my opinion (that it's not a good idea), but he wants to hear another opinion.

Are you asking if it's haram to buy a loot box? Or are you asking if it's just a bad idea to buy a loot box from a 3rd party website?

I personally stopped buying them for the same reason @lone swift had mentioned, it seems too similar to gambling.

If you earn them in game I don't think it could be haram that way, nor do I think it's haram to outright purchase a skin you want, but I'd caution against throwing money at it like it's an investment. Some people manage to make money trading skins etc but the vast majority of people aren't treating it like a business endeavor and could get sucked into the gambling aspect of it.

But, either way I'd listen to that podcast episode or consult a scholar instead of just following my line of logic.
