Salamu aleykum, I had a conversation with a friend about being in law enforcement and he told me two things:

  1. It is haram to be an official in a western country, since there is no shariah. Therefore it is kuffr to give an oath to protect a manmade law.

  2. It is haram to be in law enforcement because sometimes you have to do things that are against our deen, for example there was an incident where the prayer for eid was canceled due to covid a few years ago.

I heard from other people, that it is not haram since you can specialize in drug crimes and etc.

These two arguments are some arguments that I hear about the topic and I have not been able to find a clear answer.

The prayer for Eid being cancelled was a health risk, I’d imagine there’s a LOT of leeway for that, especially as a lot of Muslim households have older people in them

So that argument is more or less debunked..?

Whoever brings you a claim, they should also bring evidence. I would disregard what your friend has said and discuss these matters with a local Muslim scholar/Imam/teacher.

This is a topic that I'm sure varies locale to locale because of what the role of law enforcement entails in different countries.

In some countries, law enforcement rarely uses force against people and in others it's the norm. There's also considerations around what laws you are expected to enforce and what recourse you have for declining the enforcement of laws you personally don't agree with etc.

This matter is one that should be discussed with someone trained in our Islamic tradition AND is familiar with your region at the very least.

Alright brother thank you guys very much!

Islamic law says to follow the laws of a nation if they don't prevent you from practicing the essentials of your deen

Just wanted to add, oaths are not something you only do within Islam. Oaths can be made about other things as well, they’re essentially public promises where you swear or affirm on ‘something’ and as long as that is by God (Allah) you’re fine.

May Allah s.a. bless you guys!

Guys I want to add one thing: I saw this Hadith and wanted to know your opinion about this.
It is about the following source:
Sahih ibn Hibban 4586.

What’s the context of that Hadith? When was it recorded?

i think it's much better to consult a local imam, rather than going off on a forum post. the person answering did a pretty good job with being a haraam police (sorry not sorry), but fails to understand that there's a legit need for muslims to work in the force and have a presence in muslim communities.
so how are the north africans in france going to have a good role model? they won't. one of my friends was doing security in a somali community, and it was extremely helpful for the at risk youth. just being present in these environments is just and good. it might even prevent people from falling into even more bad.
it's pretty myopic if we're just examining hadith and not understanding the desire to fill a good need in a larger social context.
also, i find it kinda weird to cite a fatwa where the identity of the shaykh isn't even mentioned.
but anyways, it's just two cents, and allah knows best. if i said anything too pew pew, please forgive me.
