It was one of those Resident Evil clones with fixed camera angles, tank controls, item management, the works. It got mixed reviews becasue of how unforgiving the beginning of the game is, especially with the enemies. It does get better in the second half.

I remember watching some gameplay and seeing it had a steep learning curve
Like literally dropping you into a fight opening level and not even telling you that you need to start the chainsaw with a separate button after you equip it

Yeah. From what I hear from a lot of players that played this game, once you get use to the controls, you start to discover there's a pretty good game here. I just wish I could play Evil Dead The Game, but given that support was pulled, I'm holding out hope fans will revive it the same way they're doing with The Crew.
