oh, it actually was suggested for real, i came here today checking what happened to this one. It's like the 4th in the series and the only wone whith an actual story that is not just in the manual.

Hexen 1 did not have a lot of story outright beyond the episode messages. Hexen 2 had a lot more since there was journals strewen around the world, not a lot, but some. But it was still limited. Heretic 1 was also limited to limited story telling between episodes.

Y'all know how I feel about Heretic II. I've shouted it from the rooftops. But I'll say it yet again here.

Out of all the Heretic/Hexen games, I feel like it deserves a remaster most (though I wouldn't mind all of them getting remasters/ports, of course). Like, I find it an enjoyable game, so it sucks that it sold poorly on release not only because of the switch in perspective (which I find silly; it's still a dark fantasy shooter with many of the previous games' elements, just in third-person and with more of a story behind it), but likely the fact that it came out so close to a certain revolutionary FPS's release, and so it isn't exactly that well-known nowadays. It not being available for digital purchase unlike most of the other games/expansions due to copyright shenanigans (that I assume are no longer a problem) doesn't help.

Heretic II is good, but it got a raw deal. I hope it gets another chance soon.

IIRC there's licensing issues specific with Heretic II that's kept it from being put back up for sale again

yeah, I've also heard it is a licensing issue. which is really odd that rights for the latest game wouldn't have been transferred through the same companies with the older titles, but I'm sure there's a (dumb) explanation for it somewhere, like it was sub-licensed and that company held onto the rights for that game and fell into limbo somewhere or one of those IP-hoarding dragons that sit on them forever and won't sell them or use them

Was excited, but does that release contain Heretic 2? Not seeing it mentioned. Still an achievement for the definitive rerelease, but not having Heretic 2 seems like a miss. Maybe I'm missing something

Might have made more sense if this was only for Heretic and a separate thread existed for Heretic 2. I swear they got merged at some point
