I think one of the companions died and dropped his weapon, but a normal functional weapon, not the corrupted ones.
Where I could hoster the gun on my back, pick up the mag, etc.
Playing as the sniper class.

No, because I only could holster one gun on my back.
And far as I know the game right now don´t keep the item you have held in your hand.
at least when I tried with a grenade.
I also didn't tried to keep the semi rifle with me though, and see what happened if I proceeded to the next level

I'm not sure I'd classify this as a bug then. I don't really see an issue with players being able to rarely swap weapons.
The one thing I can see being an issue is if you can swap the weapons and go with this gun into the next level, you might not get ammo drops for it. It depends whether ammo drops are based on your class, or on holstered weapons.
