Why can’t quest avatars have audio? What’s stopping them from adding it? It would make the quest experience a million times better.
I don’t think it’s the audio that’s lagging it, its probably unoptimized worlds or avatars. Audio just seems like such a simple thing to have.
Believe it or not, it's quite demanding regardless of being on pc. The audio already glitches enough on pc. It was even worse on quest, everyone sounded like robots from time to time from the audio stuttering hard even though you had plenty of extra bandwidth. So just from having like 10 people in public world with most avatars being not visible and others being new users with default crossplatform avatars.
How do I start creating the inside of my avatar's mouth? I've got a general lip-shape on the surface, but I don't know how to "make an open space on the inside of my model."
Does anybody make custom avatars for people? I have a hard time doing it myself.

I do not think it’s the avatar itself, I’ve been having the same issue since the update and I put a empty object with a avatar descriptor and it still popped up. I’ve been asking in the servers and nothing anyone suggested helped me, but some people are saying to use the original unity ( if you find a solution please @ me, sorry I can’t really help but it’s nice to know I’m not the only on e with the issue which means vrchat might notice and fix it possibly)

People are sad that my jedi avatar have a opaque saber since the last update. I use the particle shader on it so its was transparent and super bright. But now it not . I guess. 
That's how its suppose to be. On pc when shader is off its opaque now too. as before it was transparent.
I'm pretty sure the shader itself was changed rather than how client renders the shader

yeah merge your meshes and also all of the names in the armature are very vague. I also noticed that the name of the unity project says my first unity, if this is your first time I recommend just trying it on the tutorial avatar instead.
@merry arch I haven’t updated my stuff yet since I’ve heard about a lot of bugs people are coming across in the new sdk. I use the older version and it’s the same deal. I had wings on an avatar set to particles additive and it looked really cool but now they’re opaque

The model file will be in your unity assets, just have to find it. You can right click -> show in explorer

I went to delete and re download vrchat due to me having frequent crashes. Once I log back in all of my creations are gone. The crashes have gone down but my creations are all gone

@void mango By animation textures I’m going to assume you just mean animation gestures? I would try to re make them from scratch and see if that does it, should only take maybe 5 minutes to do so.

I’m making an avatar with particles, whenever I change into the avatar the particles play for a split second then stop. I have the particles on a gesture and don’t want them activating upon switching. How do I fix this?

no. They were probably playing something through their mic.
They're just abusing the new Oculus audio component that was added in SDK
I figured out how to do it
it's kind of a glitch around it
if you update the upload menu when you delete all the audio stuff at one time, then hit ctrl + z to make them appear back then hit the upload button before the SDK refreshes to see if there's anything that shouldn't be there

Oh its the actual avatar asset in ur asset folders. Same area where u change ur rig to humanoid. theres a tab next to it called model! u click that and itll open up the menu

So what’s the deal with the audio glitch? I’ve seen avatars with 27/0 audio sources in worlds with 13+ people and I don’t crash or black screen once. I think it’s clear that avatar audio can run just fine on quest.
If you're talking about the corona ones they're using very low quality short loop so it doesn't generate much load
You start running into problems with avatars that have full length songs and high bitrate samples
Still though, it can be done (with some limits)
Just automatically lower the bit rate in the game or somethin like that right?
SDK does not check what is the audio source, it only checks for presence of audio source
makes sense. So far it seems a majority of the quest community is ok with a little bit more lag if we get audio. I’ve talked to plenty of people about it.
Client itself does not support audio resampling not to mention that would be even more load on CPU than just playing the audio in first place
Ultimately it would take extra work on SDK
That makes sense but it still seems like a possibility. After all in safety settings audio is an option, whereas shaders aren’t. Shaders are a given and damn well shouldn’t be on quest, but there is an option for audio. Makes me wonder if they were thinking about adding it at some point.
From what I’ve heard they don’t have a very good way to test updates for the quest. Why not just put the limit to one and see how things go?

Hey There I have a question about using an avatar for quest, I uploaded a avatar on VR chat only to find out that it was PC only so then I re-did the Project in unity and set it to the android version and it seems to of worked but when I entered the game on my quest I could not see the avatar in my creations but I could see the PC Avatar, so I was wondering why I can’t see my newly made quest avatar on my creations menu and I also went to the VR chat website browser and it was showing up in my creations there but again not in the game. Please help.
I noticed that I just had to make my version of unity the same as the one they use for VR so problem solved if anyone else wanted to know.

the quest would not be rendering anything other than a blue background and nameplates
more than 10 folks in that will still lag you
because audio processing is costly
and cant be gpu accelerated
in fact, the next gen consoles (Xbox Series X and PS5) are getting dedicated chips for this type of stuff to get incredible amounts of audio channels with realtime spatialized audio and proper raycasted reverb to reproduce the acoustics of a room and it's materials
and because nobody understands how complicated audio processing is, they dont see how badass it is
decoding an mp3 and playing it back is easy
giving it a believable position in space with HRTF transfer in realtime isnt

You're not supposed to add Audio to your avatar in the first place
I dont think the Quest accepts audio from avatars, or at least we cant upload audio on avatars as far as I know.
I think there is a problem when an avatar is ranked very poor on pc and it use on the quest as well. insame amount of material mesh etc

Nope its blacklisted! You can have dynamic bones on the pc version, but you cant on the quest version

I heard a rumor they might just not remove the glitch. On top of that it’s surprisingly not that hard on the quest. I’ve done extensive testing with it.
Obviously I doubt the rumor that the glitch won’t be removed but I really hope so.

I’m pretty sure it’s not breaking tos. They would’ve removed the glitch in the update a couple of days ago if that were the case. And on top of that there is no reason for quest not to run audio. I’ve done extensive testing with the glitch and it’s impossible to lag with just audio.
i have a moon avatar a friend gave me and i can hear the music and all the guns firing when i use and when they use it...i play on the quest without the link cable so just standalone quest, i was blown away that i could hear this avatar because i didn't think i'd be able to hear when my friend wanted to show me

There's also dynamic bone on quest for some avatars. Idk why but when my PC friends are playing as the ferret models theres dynamic bone but when a quest player uses it there isn't. Maybe there finally introducing some PC things to the quest?

There’s a whole world called quest dynamic bones that shows off dynamic bones in a quest only world. It’s too much to be made with animation, it’s undoubtedly true dynamic bones. I went there with 5 other people and my frames only dropped by 5 with three dancers with multiple dynamic bones.
I'm not sure of Quest world limits so maybe dynamic bones are officially supported in Quest worlds, but not Quest avatars.
Ive watched a avatar with dynamic bones many times and I've never connected my quest to a PC
I probably explained it wrong but, when the PC players are playing as the ferrets from notakids world i see the dynamic bone

It should be, as it doesn't really affect performance as long as limits are in place,and a lot of us avatar creators like to animate to songs.

This isn't really because of loading times but because of the 2018 C++ runtime conversion/translation

I know that worlds can have dynamic bones on quest but I’ve never seen dynamic bones on an avatar before. I’m pretty sure you can glitch it in just like audio but it gets laggy quick.

you do this by going to Unity click on the textures of the model, then use the inspector tab and change the Res and Quality of the textures
then upload on pc so it will detect theres less and upload it to quest

If you haven’t already, Go to settings, and in the bottom right there should be upgrade account. It’s free and gets rid of four random letters and numbers at the end of your name.

You can, you just really have to dedicate some time to a Youtube video. Trust me, I'm not the brightest person and I was able to learn Unity and Blender. My plan at the time was just a basic avatar through Unity and that spilled over into Blender. It gets addicting... Now I have a cursed avatar world with about 50 avatars. Lol

There’s that one quest dynamic bones world that runs smoothly. It has 3 dancers each with jiggle physics, hair physics, tail physics, and clothes physics. I know that you can have dynamic bones in world but not on avatars but I wonder if it actually could run it decently?

So the sdk tells me to use mobile shaders but when i use mobile shaders it says i cant use the standard shader even tho the model doesnt have a single standard shader on it

I wanna attach this lightning bolt to an avatar using the additive shader (Like in pic 1) however, (from past experience) in-game, the additive shader doesn't work and so it looks like pic 2 in-game

If it's mesh particle you could use legacy shader like soft edge cutout directly by setting material from animation but it's animator abuse so it will not animate for people that aren't looking at you

but you can't use the legacy shaders on quest.
Legacy shaders are fallback shaders of engine so you can force fallback by calling MaterialID, PathID and ShaderID from inside animation

sounds like your project might just be messed up or something, i'm not sure if anything else could help, you can try reimporting your sdk by deleting it and importing it again, but it might not help. So i would say just go ahead with the new project

I think you’re giving it too much credit, considering that 32 materials is im pretty sure poor for even pc. Thats 32 different drawcalls to put on the system. 52k tris is more than the recommend amount for a single world on quest. Everytime you move, the system has to calculate every tri moving in space.
You also have to consider that the world and also up to 9? (Forgot the max for a quest world) other ppl have to be rendered, not just the avatar
And while its doin that it also has to consider ur boundaries, position in space, position of ur hands...

and i have a router that always seems to be just about to catch fire, so the fact im not getting that many lagouts, and none of the quest users I hang out with (whos avatars are WORSE (more polys/materials) than mine) and we only lag out on VERY rare occassions

Oh shit, didn't know you were on here Luf0u. To back your point and HoodieGurl's. It is obvious that no one on the team has a quest which then brings in the neglect of the quest platform. I know the quest isn't a NASA computer but still, we are heavily limited. Before the April 1st update, I'd say VRChat was perfect for quest then. Worked and performed better than it does now. These new updates are more than obviously pc based and with the current state of VRChat on quest (Crashing every 5-10 mins is a key area and yes, i time how long it takes for me to crash) Its shown that the team might somewhat regret making a quest VRChat port.

I have a friend (really good at making quest compatible avatars) and he made an avatar that can shoot quest-compatibly, but if you look at the shot it lags the hell out of your game and I was once crashed with it. It’s not the Mac tonight, and very few people have it. I have it just to lay down.

Well it really depends what is the texture
If it's relatively simple keeping it at 1k is best, if it's large combined atlas you might need 2k or 4k for it to work
Ultimately it boils down to what kind of texture it is and how high can you afford to compress it
its an atlas but its not like super complex so i went for 1k
If the textures that were atlas input are lowres you can easily get away with lowres atlas as well, if you had one or few hires textures as input you should adjust the atlas res to reflect the highest resolution texture as possible
Which is why it's usually good idea to downscale all your input textures to same lower resolution

Just note that quality of charging cable can vary wildly so don't be surprised if it doesn't work but any 2.0 cable that can maintain 140Mbps should be fine

10K or under for quest, ideally between 5000 and 7500.
It really exemplifies the difference between handmade models and decimation. You can do a lot with 5000, and look amazing, yet even with 10K, twice as much, decimation will look horrible.
Also there's quest compatible and quest optimised. Just about anything can be quest compatible if you slap mobile shaders on it - and 22k is still pretty low compared to most popular quest compatible avatars. Quest optimised on other hand will require some actual modeling
I'm pretty sure they're adding a hard limit of 20k tris soon.

7.5K is the limit for being visible by default so 10K as a hard cap makes more sense
10k poly difference is hardly relevant if materials and meshes are properly baked and people don't slap 8k textures on it
Look at it this way, I can make medium rating crasher just by abusing animators and high resolution textures, more than anything we need better performance rating criteria
a single material avatar quest still chokes on a single 20K avatar alone in the vrc home

@alpine night I'm aware this is a bit late after you posted this but if you haven't solved it yet then see if this works.
Make sure you aren't using calculate for blendshape normals this can and will most likely cause the file size of the avatar to explode in size.
Also ensure your texture resolution isn't that high, I've noticed that you have 10 materials (not recommended for quest btw) ensure the texture resolution of these is set relatively low like 1024x1024, 512x512, or lower.

Keep in mind you have to scale textures before you atlas them, if you already atlased with different texture resolutions you have to use resolution that's close to highest resolution texture used in atlas to avoid scaling artifacts
Also if they haven't said this @alpine night you can also decimate the model, this to helps with the problem also maybe lowering the quality of the texture sometimes that helps
I would very much recommend AGAINST using Unity's built-in crunch for textures and models, the results are terrible
on quest its more like under 100k poly
If you're porting MMD model you'll be hard pressed to get it under 20k but you should always start by decimating hair separately and if the body comes with pubic hair you can remove it to save good 20k polys (yes commonly used MMD pubic hair is 20k polys)

If by neon type glow you mean emission standard lite will do the trick, if you mean some sort of soft outline glow then you'll have to experiment with matcap

What you mean change color
Either edit the texture itself in a photo editing software or split the mesh into multiple parts in a 3d editing program. For Quest though one material is a good idea where and when you can.

It’s only saying the avatar is good because it’s rating it as a pc avatar. Once you switch to Android mode you will see all the red... above 5000 is yellow. above 7500 is red... above 10000 is very poor .
Dissolve unneeded edge loops in blender, it’s easy mode for quest versions

Quest is mobile chip it really can’t handle ton of separate meshes and materials. Link them up in blender and it will probably let it in. My guess is the error is just wrong. It knows it’s not allowed but isn’t telling you the right reason why

Hey there! Best practice for not ruining the meshes and their UV is going into the object data and making sure everything is set to the default UVMap! I ran into this issue all the time but it just take a few more minutes to get dialed in! 🙂
The best vid for reference to make sure everything is set properly before being imported into Unity would be Tupper's avatar tutorial that makes sure your armature hierarchy is correct or else the rigging will not be recognized in the correct order! One sec while I grab the link @dense ravine

Oh! Crap! I missed a super important part! At the end, you have to delete the original "UVMap" under the Data tab (under UVMaps), and rename the "TextureAtlas" map to "UVMap." Jeez. I missed a really important point. I'm sorry!

No reason merging meshes should change the textures in any way.

For historical purposes: The issue was optimized game objects was checked in Rig config. gotta be unchecked

Optimised object settings will break humanoid IK, it should only be used for generic rigs and even then it doesn't really do anything for VRC

@pastel storm Of course you can make an avatar for yourself. If its for quest, make sure to read up on the documentation on how to limit your avatar to optimize it properly and upload it properly
